TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Tanner Tripp tossed eight three-hit innings and Jose Vargas drove in three runs as the Traverse City Beach Bums finished off their home campaign with a 4-1 win over the Rockford Aviators on Sunday evening at Wuerfel Park.
Tripp (4-1) polished off his first professional season with his best outing of the year. After the first two batters of the game reached, Tripp set down four in a row, 16 of the next 17 and 21 of 23 he faced through seven innings.
He carried a one-hitter into the eighth inning when Elijah Trail led off with a solo homer for Rockford's lone tally of the contest. Tripp ended up throwing eight innings, allowing a run on three hits with two strikeouts to pick up his third straight win.
Will Rankin picked up his eighth save of the season by firing a perfect ninth inning.
Offensively, Traverse City jumped ahead in the third inning. With runners at first at second and one away, Jose Vargas sliced a single to right-center that scored Jeff DeBlieux from second and Carlos Berroa all the way from first on a pure hustle play, sliding under the tag of the catcher Ryan Breen.
The Beach Bums added another run in the fifth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Kevin Taylor, making it 3-0 Traverse City.
Vargas blasted his sixth home run of the year leading off the seventh to open up a 4-0 lead for the Beach Bums. Vargas finished the game going 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
Kyle Hassna (2-4) took the loss for the Aviators by giving up three runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
The Beach Bums will finish the season on the road against the Windy City ThunderBolts starting on Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. Neither team has announced its starting pitcher. Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 7:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
