Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL. - The Gateway Grizzlies were unable to wrap up the regular season at GCS Ballpark on a high note, falling to the Washington Wild Things 6-0 on Sunday evening.
Washington (54-37) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after Carter Bell's solo blast to right field against Grizzlies' starting pitcher JaVaun West (7-3).
West was terrific in his seven innings of work, allowing just two runs on four hits while throwing 125 pitches and striking out eleven batters. With Gateway fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive, West pitched on only three days rest.
The Wild Things got another run in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single from Scott Kalamar. The score held at 2-0 until the ninth inning, when Washington scratched across four runs off Gateway's Richard Barrett.
Left-handed pitcher Zac Fuesser (9-2) was very effective in his six scoreless innings on the mound for Washington, giving up only four hits. Fuesser gave way to reliever Al Yevoli, who finished things up with three scoreless frames of his own.
The Grizzlies (49-44) had their chances to break through against Fuesser and Yevoli, leaving ten runners on base during the course of the ballgame. Only three batters in Gateway's lineup recorded at least one hit against Wild Things' pitching.
GCS Ballpark saw one of its largest crowds of the season in the home schedule finale, with a paid attendance of 6,568.
The Grizzlies begin a three-game series against the Joliet Slammers at Silver Cross Field on Tuesday. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. in Joliet, Ill.
