Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors scored four goals in the first period and rode that strong start to their eighth straight win.

Moose Jaw finished a two-game road trip to the Central Division with a 5-2 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers at Co-op Place on Saturday night.

"It was a good start to the game, we get four pretty early there and it's trying to maintain focus after that, but absolutely good start," Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said after the win.

Ryder Korczak paced the Warriors' attack with a goal and three points, while Eric Alarie posted a Gordie Howe hat trick in the win.

Warriors' 2021 first round pick Marek Howell also scored his first Western Hockey League goal as Moose Jaw continued to roll since the WHL Trade Deadline.

"It's something pretty special," Korczak said. "We're playing good hockey and we're excited for it."

The last time the Warriors won eight straight games came during the 2018-19 season.

Korczak credited the chemistry in the room for pushing the Warriors to new heights on the streak.

"The coaching staff get us together, it's just a good group of guys and we show it on the ice," he said.

Moose Jaw came out firing with 20-year-old defenceman Majid Kaddoura wiring in his fourth of the season just 2:07 into the game.

The Warriors kept the pedal down when Korczak struck for his 17th of the season just 3:52 later.

A little under four minutes later, Alarie fired in his third goal on the road trip and 13th of the season to make it 3-0 for Moose Jaw.

Howell would finish off the offensive outburst in the first period with his first in the WHL with just over four minutes to play in the frame.

The Calgary product played both games with the Warriors over the weekend and Burnett said it was nice to see him get rewarded with a goal.

"He gets and gets it off real quick," he said. "Real happy for him, it's one he'll remember for a long time and the boys got him his puck and they're all real happy for him."

Medicine Hat pushed back after the first period and Brayden Boehm got the Tigers on the board just 1:57 into the second.

The Tigers pushed throughout the period and into the third. They cut Moose Jaw's lead down to two when Teague Patton found the back of the net 6:30 into the final frame.

The Warriors found their footing as the third wore on and Jagger Firkus sealed the win with his 26th of the season on the power play with 5:57 to play.

"We came out flying and then our second period was a little bit off, so obviously there's some areas in our game that we can fix up," Korczak aid.

Alarie that it's a good sign that the team isn't satisfied, despite completing their eighth straight win.

"We can find mistakes in every game we play, we aren't perfect in any game and I know we can better and we'll continue to improve," he said.

Jackson Unger improved to 5-4-0-0 this season with a 29-save performance in the win.

Medicine Hat outshot Moose Jaw 31-30 on the night, while the Warriors were 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The Warriors remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 25-16-3-1 record, which has them six points up on Saskatoon and seven points behind Red Deer.

The next action for the Warriors is coming up on Wednesday night when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at Mosaic Place for Rain Check Night. Click here for more details.
