Portland Outpaces Chiefs in Goal-Filled Saturday Night Battle
February 6, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs couldn't keep pace in an offensive blur on Saturday night, falling to the Portland Winterhawks, 7-3. Chase Bertholet led the Chiefs with a goal and two assists.
The Winterhawks struck first as Jaydon Dureau found some empty space on the weak side to pot his ninth of the season at 5:08.
Spokane answered at 13:40 of the opening frame when defenseman Brayden Crampton found a seam through traffic to score his first career Western Hockey League goal.
The Chiefs took the lead just 15 seconds later as Bertholet snapped one home from the right circle.
The flurry of goals continued as Portland tied the game up at 14:19 when Kyle Chyzowski found the twine. The three goals scored (by two teams) in 39 seconds was just seven seconds off a Chiefs franchise record - Spokane and Seattle combined for three in 32 seconds on March 20, 2015.
Spokane defenseman Graham Sward evened things up at three apiece just under five minutes into the second, rifling the puck just inside the left post from a sharp angle inside the right circle.
Once again the Winterhawks answered as team captain Clay Hanus scored on a power play at 5:09, regaining a one-goal advantage at 4-3. Marcus Nguyen corralled a rebound at 9:01 to push the Portland lead to two.
Portland added two more in the third to pad their lead as James Stefan scored his 13th and Dureau completed the hat trick to reach the final 7-3 tally.
The Winterhawks outshot the Chiefs 46-19 on the night. Mason Beaupit started and made 26 saves on 31 shots faced before Manny Panghli came on in relief, turning aside 13-of-15. Dante Giannuzzi earned the nod in net for Portland, going 16-for-19. The Chiefs went 0-for-5 on the power play while Portland went 4-for-7.
These two clubs meet in four more consecutive games, continuing on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at Portland.
