Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Jaydon Dureau scored a hat-trick and nine different Winterhawks extended their point streaks as Portland picked up its ninth consecutive victory with a 7-3 win over the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday. Dante Giannuzzi stopped 16 of 19 shots in the win, and is now 11-1-0-1 in his last 13 starts.
In addition to their nine consecutive victories, the Winterhawks have also recorded at least a point in 16 straight contests (15-0-0-1).
Portland got on the board first for a third straight game thanks to Dureau's first of the evening on the power play. Cross Hanas dug the puck out of the corner and found Tyson Kozak at the left circle, who wired a cross-crease pass to Dureau for a tidy finish. The see-saw first period was just beginning, though, as Spokane soon responded with Brayden Crampton's first WHL tally to tie things up at 13:40. Chase Bertholet kept the Chiefs' momentum rolling with a goal 15 seconds later to give the hosts the lead, but Kyle Chyzowski brought the Hawks level once more, scoring for the fourth game in a row less than 30 seconds later. Wrapping up a wild first stanza, Dureau's second tally of the night - also on the power play - restored Portland's one-goal lead when Cross Hanas' shot deflected to him at the right circle and Dureau slotted it through Mason Beaupit.
The Chiefs' Graham Sward responded early in the second period to level the score again, but Portland poured it on with back-to-back unanswered tallies in the middle frame. Clay Hanus bagged the first, another PPG, with a long-range missile into the top corner, extending his point-streak to nine games. Marcus Nguyen found Portland's sixth goal of the night on the man-advantage four minutes later, corralling a loose puck in front and potting it upstairs for his 10th of the year. Nguyen has now scored in three consecutive outings.
Not to be outdone, Portland's James Stefan also scored for the third game in a row early in the final frame as he potted a rebound past Manny Panghli, who was serving in relief of Beaupit. Finally, Jaydon Dureau posted the Winterhawks' first hat-trick of the year with some slick moves on a breakaway at 13:32 to seal the win.
Portland's four power-play goals marked a season-high for a single game.
The Winterhawks next host the Chiefs on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the VMC. Puck drop is at 7:00 P.M. for that tilt.
