Swift Current Broncos News Release

Swift Current, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (16-23-4-1) received stellar goaltending from Isaac Poulter and timely penalty kills on their way to a 2-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes (17-19-2-1) on Saturday night.

A scoreless first period saw both teams with multiple power play chances and while the Broncos couldn't capitalize on three power plays in the first, they did kill off two Hurricanes man advantages as the two teams went into the intermission scoreless.

Early in the second period the Broncos went back to the penalty kill, and Poulter came up with a highlight reel save. The Hurricanes worked the puck across the slot to Tyson Laventure in the right circle, and he let a shot go that appeared labeled for the top corner until Poulter slid to his left and made a windmill glove save.

The game remained scoreless until shortly past the halfway mark of the second period. The Broncos had a 3-on-1 rush into the Lethbridge zone, and Carter Stebbings worked the puck to Eric Van Impe coming down the right wing.

Van Impe's shot from in tight was stopped, but Cole Nagy pounced on the rebound for his 10th goal of the season, putting the Broncos up 1-0 at the 10:58 mark of the second period. Offence was hard to come by through two periods as the shots were tied at just 13 apiece through 40 minutes.

Swift Current extended their lead shortly after the puck dropped in the third period. Josh Fluker banked the puck ahead on right wing and it was picked up by Josh Davies.

Davies then cut wide to the left around a Hurricanes defenceman before sliding the puck across the crease to Connor Hvidston, and he tapped in his fifth of the year to put the Broncos up 2-0 just 19 seconds into the third. Fluker recorded the second assist on the goal, the first WHL point for the seventh overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

The Hurricanes ramped up their offensive attack following the goal, eventually outshooting the Broncos 13-5 in the third period and spoiling Poulter's shutout bid.

After forcing a turnover behind the Bronco net, the Hurricanes eventually worked the puck to the front of the goal where Justin Hall was able to redirect it past Poulter, giving the Hurricanes life with 4:39 left in regulation.

Lethbridge brought Jared Picklyk to the bench for the extra attacker late, but the Broncos were able to fend off the late push by the Hurricanes and hold on for the 2-1 win.

Swift Current is now off for six days until they travel to Manitoba for the third and final time this season. They'll face the Brandon Wheat Kings (20-14-2-2) on Friday and the Winnipeg ICE on Saturday.

Announced attendance was 1,342.
