Walleye Come up Short in Wheeling 6-2

(Wheeling, WV) The Wheeling Nailers scored four times in the second period and Toledo couldn't recover in a 6-2 loss Saturday night in Wheeling. Toledo has an overall record of 12-7-1-3 and 9-5-1-2 on the road.

Toledo struck for the first goal when A.J. Jenks (8th) sent a perfect wrist shot into the top right corner of the Wheeling net at 9:43 of the first period. Wheeling tied the game with a deflected shot at 15:26 of the period.

The Nailers exploded in the second period scoring four times. The first came at 2:58 of the period when Zack Torquato beat Lerg with a wrist shot. The goal came with some question as it looked as it may have hit the cross bar instead of going in. Wheeling led 4-1 when the Walleye picked up their second goal of the night, power play goal from Josh Shalla at 16:48. The Nailers extended the lead back to three at 19:50 of the second period on a shorthanded goal.

The penalty filled game finished with a combined 45 minutes in penalties (Toledo has 12) and the Walleye finished the night one of seven on the power play.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 30 of 35 shots and has a record of 7-3-2. The loss snapped a seven game road unbeaten streak (5-0-2) for the Walleye.
