WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento River Cats catcher Stephen Vogt has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for the week of July 15-21, the PCL announced today.
In a week shortened by the All-Star break, Vogt hit .611 with 11 RBI and three home runs in Sacramento's four-game series in Salt Lake. He led the league in batting average, hits, RBI, home runs, extra-base hits (5), total bases (22), slugging percentage (1.222) and on-base percentage (1.889). Vogt had arguably his best game of the year on Friday, July 19 when he went 5-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI.
This is Vogt's first weekly award of the 2013 season despite beginning the season on a tear. Though his first 22 games with the River Cats, he was hitting .407 with a 1.170 OPS, including seven home runs. On the year, Vogt is hitting .325 with 50 runs scored, 12 homers, 57 RBI, 35 walks, 21 doubles, three triples and a .938 OPS in 72 games played.
The Visalia, Calif. native collected his first Major League hit earlier this year with Oakland, hitting a solo home run on June 28 against the St. Louis Cardinals. In his four-game stint with the A's, he went 2-for-13 (.154) with one home run and two RBI.
Vogt is the fifth River Cats player honored by the league this year, as Scott Moore was named Player of the Week for the week of May 20-26, one week after Bruce Billings took home Pitcher of the Week Honors for the week of May 13-19. Luke Montz was named Player of the Week for the week of June 3-9, and Grant Green won the award for the week of June 24-30.
