Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Stephen Vogt of the Sacramento River Cats and Evan Meek of the Round Rock Express put up strong performances in the short week following the All-Star break to earn the Player and Pitcher of the Week awards for July 15th to 21st, the league office announced today.
In four games versus Salt Lake, Vogt hit .611 with 11 hits, 11 RBI and three home runs. He led the league in average, hits, RBI, home runs, extra-base-hits (5), total bases (22), slugging percentage (1.222), and on-base percentage (1.889), and had at least one hit in all four games and multiple hits in three of the games. The catcher's series was highlighted by a 5-for-6 performance Friday where he hit two home runs, scored four runs and knocked in six RBI in an 18-7 victory over the Bees.
Born in Visalia, California, Vogt was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2007 draft. He was traded to the Oakland Athletics from Tampa Bay on April 6th, 2013. Vogt made his Major League debut with the Rays on April 6th, 2012 against the New York Yankees. In his first season in PCL, he has hit at a .325 clip with twelve home runs and 57 RBI.
On Sunday versus Iowa, Meek tossed eight shutout innings in a win. The right-hander punched out four batters and only gave up four hits and two walks. His solid performance against the Cubs improved his record to 5-4 on the season with a 3.65 ERA in split time between a starter and a reliever.
Meek, born in Bellevue, Washington, was signed as a non-drafted free agent on May 27th, 2003 by the Minnesota Twins and has spent time in the San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations before being signed to a minor league contract by the Texas Rangers in December 2012. He made his Major League debut as a reliever with the Pirates on April 2, 2008 against the Atlanta Braves.
