Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - Justin Fitzgerald allowed two runs and four hits over a season-high eight innings to earn his first career Triple-A win as the Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 5-2 on Sunday at Chukchansi Park.
Both runs off Fitzgerald were via solo home runs by Tacoma's Nate Tenbrink and Abraham Almonte. Fitzgerald, though, allowed two hits after Abraham's leadoff home run in the third inning to help secure the victory.
The win for the Grizzlies also clinched their first series victory since June 10-13. Fresno finished the season 8-8 against Tacoma, preserving a stretch of four years in which the Grizzlies have not lost a season series against the Rainiers.
After Fitzgerald allowed a home run to Tenbrink in the top of the second, the Grizzlies answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Brett Pill led off the second with a stand-up triple and was later driven in by Chris Dominguez's groundout. Ehire Adrianza and Ydwin Villegas also contributed RBI singles in the inning to make it 3-1 Fresno.
Dominguez hit a leadoff homer in the fourth inning to give the Grizzlies a 4-2 advantage. The home run also gave the Grizzlies a roundtripper in each of the four games during the series.
Johnny Monell capped the scoring with an RBI double down the right field line to score Juan Perez in the fifth inning.
All five Fresno runs were issued to Tacoma starting pitcher Chance Ruffin. The right-hander surrendered the five runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in his second loss of the season.
Brett Bochy tossed a perfect ninth inning, striking out two, to pick up his first career Triple-A save.
While Dominguez led the Grizzlies with two RBI, Villegas paced the Grizzlies with two hits.
The Grizzlies head to Salt Lake City on Monday to start an eight-game road trip. Fresno will first face Salt Lake in a four-game series, with Fresno starting right-hander Mitch Lively against the Bees' Eric Cendejas.
