Iowa Cubs News Release
Round Rock, TX - The Iowa Cubs (49-53) were limited to just four hits and lost 3-0 to the Round Rock Express (57-45) at Dell Diamond tonight. Mike Olt's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning provided all the offense as the Express won the series 3-1 and finished 10-6 against the Cubs this season. The Cubs have been shut out a league-high 11 times this season.
Express starter Evan Meek (5-4) retired the first 10 batters that he faced before Donnie Murphy blooped a double down the right field line in the fourth. The hit also extended Murphy's hitting streak to eight games. Meek allowed just three more hits and two walks through eight innings, his longest outing of the year.
Cubs' starter Barret Loux set a season-high with five walks, but didn't allow a run through five innings. He gave up three hits and struck out five in the start. Alberto Cabrera followed with two scoreless innings in his first game with Iowa since a promotion from double-A Tennessee.
Brian Schlitter came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning for the Cubs. After getting the first two batters to ground out, Jim Adduci bounced a single down the left field line out of the reach of a diving Josh Vitters. Jared Hoying followed with a ground ball towards shortstop Tim Torres, but Torres turned his glove up and didn't move as he apparently didn't see where the ball was hit. The ball rolled past him into left field for single and brought Olt to the plate. Olt lined his 11th homer of the year onto the grass berm in left, giving him a three-run homer in each of the last two games.
Justin Miller came in and retired the Cubs in order in the top of the ninth to earn his first save with the Express this season. Schlitter (0-2) suffered the loss.
The Cubs return home and start a four-game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs tomorrow night at 7:05 at Principal Park. LH Chris Rusin (8-7, 3.35) is scheduled to start for the Cubs against RH Jared Rogers (4-2, 5.95) for the Zephyrs. The gates will open at 5:35 and fans can take some swings in pre-game Fan Batting Practice. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
