
Vipers Fall to Bighorns 124-111

Hidalgo, TEXAS - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers fell 124-111 to the Reno Bighorns Friday night at State Farm Arena.
Marshall Brown and Courtney Fortson each tallied 19 points to lead the Vipers. Fortson also added 14 assists. Tyren Johnson recorded a double-double 10 points, 10 rebounds.
Reno was led by Josh Selby with 27 points. Eric Devendorf recorded 25 points, and David Harrison added 24 points, 9 rebounds.
Mo Charlo put the first points of the game on the board with a jump shot. Jermaine Taylor responded with a shot for the Vipers to tie the game at 2 points. Selby followed with a three-pointer to put the Bighorns ahead 5-2. Greg Smith tallied a dunk and Taylor sunk a jump shot to grab the 6-5 lead for Rio Grande Valley. Brown banked two shots from the line to give the Vipers their largest lead of the first quarter13-9. The Bighorns' Harrison knocked down back-to-back shots to give Reno the 20-18 advantage with 4:29 remaining in the first quarter. However, Brown responded with a shot from behind the arc to take the 21-20 lead. The Vipers maintained their momentum and held a 30-28 lead going into the second quarter.
Devendorf helped Reno reclaim the 33-32 lead early in the second quarter with a 3-pointer, followed by two free throws. The Bighorns built their lead to 48-40 with 7:48 remaining in the first half. Shots from Stanley Asumnu, Fortson and Smith helped the Vipers close their deficit. Then, a jump shot by Fortson tied the game at 52 points. Wright sunk two shots from the line to put Reno back up 55-53, but Brown responded with a shot from downtown to set the Vipers up 55-53. Rio Grande Valley continued to fight and built their lead to 65-55 with 1:15 remaining in the second quarter. The Vipers held the 65-59 lead at halftime.
Reno came back from the half fighting and held the 70-69 lead by the 9:18 mark in the third quarter. The Bighorns quickly built their lead to 80-71 with 6:57 on the clock. Smith banked a jump shot, Brown followed by a 3-pointer and a layup by Asumnu helped the Vipers get within 2 points of Reno 80-78. Fortson tied the game at 80 points with a layup, but Zach Graham answered for the Bighorns with a 3-point shot that put Reno back up 83-80. At the end of the third quarter, the Bighorns held the 93-85 lead.
Rio Grande Valley never reclaimed the lead in the fourth quarter. Reno won the game 124-111.
The Vipers are back in action Saturday night when they host the second game of a back-to-back series against the Reno Bighorns. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at State Farm Arena. Saturday's contest is also the last home game of the regular-season for the Vipers.
