Erie, Pennsylvania, Friday, April 6 - The Erie BayHawks hosted the Canton Charge in their season finale on Friday night but were unable to finish out the home schedule with a win, falling 114-103. The Charge were able to out rebound Erie on the offensive end by seven and score 16 second chance points to Erie's six.
The first quarter started with the two teams trading leads for the first four minutes before Luke Harangody's lay-up put the Charge ahead for good. At the end of the first frame, Canton was ahead by ten, behind Antoine Agudio's ten points. The second quarter belonged to Canton's Josh Akognon who scored 23 of Canton's 34 points. After trailing by 22 points with less than three minutes to go, the BayHawks had an offensive surge, cutting the lead in half by the intermission.
Minutes into the third stanza, Erie would cut the lead to nine with a basket by Joey Graham. This would be the closest the BayHawks would get for the remainder of the game. The Charge were able to stretch their lead to 24 by the start of the fourth quarter, powered by Luke Harangody's 13 points. Canton took it's biggest lead of the game with a 26 point advantage at the start of the fourth quarter. The BayHawks never gave up, shooting 65% from the floor and eventually cut the lead all the way down to 11 but ran out of time and fell, 114-103.
Graham paced the BayHawks with 24 points and nine rebounds. D.J. Kennedy also chipped in with 22 points, five rebounds and six assists. Marvin Phillips (17), Kyle Goldcamp (15) and Kyle Spain (13) also scored double digits for the BayHawks. Akognon led Canton with 33 points on the night. He was assisted by Harangody's 22, Agudio's 15 and double digit scoring efforts from three other Charge players.
The two teams will finish out the regular season in a re-match tomorrow at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. Canton was able to secure a spot in the 2011-2012 NBA Development League playoffs with their victory tonight. Tomorrow's game will have an important impact on the league's final playoff rankings. The BayHawks will return home for a playoff game next week. Details about the game have not been determined but should be known early next week.
