Louisville Bats News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Louisville Bats (28-48) dropped Monday night's game to the Indianapolis Indians (40-34) by a 3-1 score at Victory Field. Major League rehabber Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot in his first career game with Louisville.
Louisville starting pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez (2-6, 6.87) put together a solid outing, going a season-high 7.0 innings while getting the loss. The right-hander allowed all three Indianapolis runs, none earned, on five hits and one home run, walking two and striking out six on 95 pitches and 60 strikes.
The Indians scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by catcher Steven Baron, his second of the season. The Bats should have been out of the inning by then, but an error to start the inning allowed Will Craig to reach base safely, with Baron delivering the two-out blast to make the runs unearned.
Louisville would draw closer with its lone run of the ballgame in the top of the fourth, a Josh VanMeter solo home run, his 14th of the season and first since coming back from Cincinnati. The Indiana native is now batting .417 (5-for-12) since being optioned by the Reds.
Indianapolis added another run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk by Kevin Kramer, before Gutierrez tiptoed out of the inning, limiting the damage by getting Craig to strike out and Logan Hill to fly out to end the frame.
The game was moving right along until a 50-minute rain delay occurred in the eighth inning, when the Bats had runners on first and second with one out. VanMeter walked to load the bases, before Indy reliever Tyler Lyons escaped the trouble unscathed by inducing an Aristides Aquino 6-4-3 double play.
Second baseman Scooter Gennett doubled on a fly ball to the warning track on the second pitch of the game, flying out to center field in each of his next at-bats in the third and fifth innings. In his final plate appearance of the night, the MLB rehabber singled in the eighth to finish 2-for-4 before being lifted for pinch runner Narciso Crook.
The Bats finish off their three-stop, eight-game road trip against Indianapolis tomorrow with right-hander Tejay Antone (1-0, 8.44) set to make his second start of the year for Louisville, set to oppose Indy right-hander Eduardo Vera (3-5, 5.94) with another 7:05 first pitch.
