ValleyCats Top Black Bears 5-1 to Begin Homestand

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats kicked off a six-game homestand with a 5-1 victory over the West Virginia Black Bears on Tuesday night, in front of 4,765 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The Black Bears, who are in their first season in West Virginia after moving from Jamestown, N.Y. (where they were known as the Jamestown Jammers), entered Tuesday's contest on a nine-game winning streak. But the 'Cats put an end to that streak thanks to some clutch hitting, and stellar pitching.

West Virginia actually scored first, pushing a run across in the top of the third inning, when Black Bears left fielder Ty Moore drove home shortstop Kevin Newman with an RBI single.

However, the Black Bears lead only lasted two short innings, as the 'Cats tied the game in the bottom of the fifth frame, when Antonio Nunez, who reached on a double, scored after a West Virginia throwing error following a single by Johnny Sewald.

One batter later, the ValleyCats took their first lead of the game, when Edwin Medina drove home Sewald with a triple down the right field line.

Tri-City then extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh, when Cesar Carrasco scored on another West Virginia error, then Aaron Mizell drove home Sewald and Carrasco with a two-run double to left field.

The four-run margin was more than enough for the 'Cats pitching staff, as they held the Black Bears scoreless after that lone tally in the top of the third.

Getting the start for Tri-City was Rogelio Armenteros, who earned his first Minor League victory, tossing five innings, while striking out two batters, and allowing only four hits.

Austin Nicely, who directly followed Armenteros, was just as solid, as the left-hander allowed only two hits in three scoreless innings.

Right-hander Zac Grotz began the ninth inning by striking out both batters he faced, although the second hitter reached on a wild pitch third strike. Fortunately, left-hander Steve Naemark then came in to end the game by striking out both batters he saw, as the 'Cats managed to register four strike outs in a single inning.

Tri-City will look to continue their solid play on Wednesday in the second game of this three-game series against West Virginia. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Trent Thornton (1-0, 3.70), who will be opposing Black Bears RHP Luis Paula (2-1, 5.40).
