Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The bat remain hot, and the pitching remains strong. The Scrappers (16-20) took the first game of a three-game set, 9-2, against the Connecticut Tigers (18-18) at Dodd Stadium. It was Mahoning Valley's sixth win in their last eight games.

The Scrappers scored a run in the top of the third on an RBI single for Nate Winfrey to score Mark Mathias. Emmanuel Tapia was tagged out for the third out of the inning when he held up at third base when the throw came in. Tapia left the game with an injury.

Connecticut took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run for Cam Gibson, and then an RBI single for Tanner Donnels to score Josh Lester.

The Scrappers scored two in the seventh and eighth innings. Sam Haggerty doubled, and later scored on an RBI double for Ka'ai Tom. Tom later scored on a sacrifice fly for Willi Castro.

In the eighth, the Scrappers did something nobody will see very often. Connor Marabell hit his second triple of the season, and then scored when the next batter, Austin Fisher, did the exact same thing, but it was his first of the season. Haggerty then singled to score Fisher.

The Scrappers led 5-2 going into the ninth, and added four insurance runs. Tom had the best game of his professional career, going 5-for-5 with three singles, a double, and a triple. Batters 1-3 (Haggerty, Tom, Mathias) combined to have seven of Mahoning Valley's 14 hits. Mathias extended his hit streak to nine games, while Daniel Salters singled in the top of the ninth to extend his hit streak to 10 games.

Jared Robinson went five and one-third innings giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out three. Jordan Carter (1-1) got the win. He went one and two-thirds innings allowing just one hit. Gerson Moreno (2-3) takes the loss for the Tigers. He was tagged for four of the nine Mahoning Valley runs.

A short night of sleep, and the Scrappers will be back at it on Wednesday against the Tigers for an 11:05 a.m. first pitch. Kieran Lovegrove takes the mound for Mahoning Valley.
