
Mahoning Valley Strikes Late to Take Game One

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (18-18) fell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (16-20) by a score of 9-2 on Tuesday night. Connecticut had won six of seven games coming in.
Mahoning Valley took a 1-0 lead in the third but Connecticut was able to briefly take a lead. In the sixth designated hitter Cam Gibson hit his fourth home run of the year to tie the score. The Tigers later took the lead 2-1 in the same inning on a Tanner Donnels RBI single.
The lead was short lived for Connecticut as Mahoning Valley retook the lead in the seventh. Designated hitter Sean Haggerty (2-4, 2 R, RBI) led off the inning against Gerson Moreno (2-2) with a double and scored when the following batter Ka'ai Tom (5-5, 4 RBI, BB) doubled him home tying the score. Tom later scored on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Willie Castro making it 3-2.
In the eighth inning centerfielder Connor Marabell (2-5, 2 R) started the inning with a triple and scored on a second straight triple by third basemen Austin Fisher. After Fisher scored on a RBI single by Haggerty it was 5-2 Mahoning Valley. They added four more runs in the ninth.
Jared Robinson started the game for the Scrappers and pitched five and third innings giving up five hits and two runs while striking out three and walking two. Jordan Carter (1-1) picked up the win going an inning and two thirds in relief without allowing a run and giving up a single hit.
Sandy Baez got the ball to start for Connecticut and lasted just four innings but only gave up one run despite surrendering six hits and walking five.
There was a twenty-eight minute delay during the game after Emmanuel Tapia severely hurt his leg rounding third base in the top of the third inning.
Connecticut will play the second game of a three game series against Mahoning Valley on Wednesday. The first pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale!
