Staten Island Yankees News Release

The Batavia Muckdogs (12-24) defeated the Staten Island Yankees (19-17) by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Jeff Hendrix scored the first run of the game for the Yankees in the bottom of the first inning. Hendrix reached on a single to centerfield and advanced to second base on his seventh stolen base of the season. He moved over to third base on a Kyle Holder groundout and scored on a Thairo Estrada sacrifice fly to right field.

Hendrix also produced the second run of the game in the bottom of the third. He led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third base on a Holder single, and Estrada drove him in again with an RBI single.

Batavia got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Alex Fernandez walked with the bases loaded. Eric Fisher stepped on the plate and Batavia did not look back.

Fisher got the job done in the top of the fifth when he brought home the tying run in Stone Garrett on a groundout to second base. Garrett reached on Brandon Wagner's fifth error of the season.

Batavia took the lead for good in the seventh inning. Fisher once again started a rally by drawing his second walk of the game. Roy Morales and Yuniel Ramirez followed it up with a single each before Giovanny Alfonzo brought in the go-ahead run with a sac-fly to right field. Batavia would have tacked on another run if it wasn't for Jhalan Jackson's outfield assist to throw out Morales at home plate. Morales headed for home after Travis Brewster hit a line-drive single to right field but it was not meant to be.

The Muckdogs tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning on a two-RBI single by Morales. Fisher and Garrett scored on the hit.

The Yankees ninth inning rally fell short with the tying runs on base. Holder grounded out to short to end the ball game. Zach Zehner scored the final Yankee run on an error by Fernandez.

Yankees starting pitcher Domingo Acevedo did not give distance but he did strike out a handful of batters. He went 2.2 innings, giving up three hits, no earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. Alex Robinett (L, 1-1) took the loss in relief with very spotty command. He gave up one run on no hits, three walks, and one strikeout in 2.1 innings pitched. Will Carter gave up one run in relief, while Michael Schaub gave up two. Yankees pitchers combined to issue eleven walks in the loss.

The Yankees and Muckdogs will play bright and early Wednesday at 11 a.m. for Camp Day.
