
Aberdeen Breaks Out the Bats Against Auburn

AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays fell to the Ironbirds 10-0 in game one of a three game series against Aberdeen. It was the first time this year Auburn was shutout.
It all started in the second. The Ironbirds struck for three runs against Jefry Rodriguez in the top of the second one five hits, four of which were singles. On top of that, all three runs were scored with just one out as Rodriguez struck out the Ironbirds' two and three hitters to end the frame.
An inning later in the third, the Ironbirds added a couple more. Randy Gassaway led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Steve Laurino. Chris Shaw walked to load the bases and then Mike Odenwalder stepped in next and walked to put Aberdeen up 4-0. The next hitter Drew Turbin then drove in the fifth run with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Doubledays and Ironbirds both went scoreless in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Laurino led off with a double. The first baseman later scored on an RBI single by Ricardo Andujar to put the Birds up 6-0. The single knocked Rodriguez out of the game after the following line: 4.2 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, and 5 K's.
Two innings later in the seventh, Aberdeen added two more. Laurino led off with a walk and then came around to score two batters later when Mike Odenwaelder launched a two-run homer to left, his first of the season. In the eighth, Aberdeen struck for two more when Gassaway scored on a fielder's choice and Drew Turbin doubled in Shaw to put the Ironbirds up 10-0.
Auburn failed to score in the eighth and ninth and fell 10-0 in game one of the series. Francisco Jimenez earned his second victory and moved to 2-3 with the following line: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 2 K's.
The Doubledays return tomorrow night at 7:05 PM to Falcon Park to face the Ironbirds. Taylor Guilbeau (LHP) starts for Auburn against Cristian Alvarado (RHP) for Aberdeen.
