Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA --- The Lake Monsters took a 7-1 lead with seven runs in the fifth inning, but Vermont need a two-run double from Brett Siddall in the top of the 10th inning to beat the State College Spikes 9-7 in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Medlar Field.

Trailing 1-0 with just two infield singles over the first four innings, Vermont loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two singles before Trace Loehr tied the game with an RBI single and Richie Martin walked to force home a second run. Seth Brown followed with a grand slam home run to rightcenter for a 6-1 Lake Monsters lead. It was Brown's first home run of the season and the Lake Monsters third grand slam, the first time in team's 22-year history that Vermont has hit three grand slams in one year.

Vermont still led 7-1 when State College put together four straight two-out hits in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 7-6, then tied the game on a Josh Switchak RBI single in the ninth. With the bases loaded and just one out, Lake Monsters reliever James Naile got Cole Lankford to ground into an inning-ending 4-2-3 double play and keep the Lake Monsters from losing their first game when leading after eight innings since July 15, 2011.

Spikes reliever Kender Villegas retired the first two Lake Monsters in the 10th inning before a walk to Nick Collins and a Steven Pallares single. Brett Siddall followed with his third hit of the night, a two-run double to centerfield to give Vermont back the lead at 9-7. Corey Miller came on in the bottom of the 10th inning and retired the Spikes 1-2-3 for his first save of the season.

Brown, Loehr, Collins and Jesus Lopez each had two hits for Vermont, while Kevin Ferreras allowed just two hits over four scoreless innings of relief with one walk and three strikeouts. Naile (1-0) picked up the win after getting charged with his first blown save of the year by allowing two inherited runners to score in the eighth and giving up the tying run in the ninth. Switchak was 3-for-5 with one run, a triple and two RBI for State College (18-18), while Villegas (0-2) took the loss.

Vermont (15-21) snaps a modest two-game losing streak with the victory and continues the series at State College on Wednesday night starting at 7:05 pm. The series concludes on Thursday before the Lake Monsters head to Williamsport for three games over the weekend before returning home on Monday night.
