ValleyCats Drop Two in Williamsport
July 10, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA -Tri-City ValleyCats played a hard-fought doubleheader against the Williamsport Crosscutters, but fell one run short in each of the two seven-inning games by the score of 1-0, and 3-2, on Friday night at Bowman Field, in Williamsport, Pa.
The first game of the night was a pitcher's duel, as both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Williamsport catcher Gregori Rivero drove home second baseman Josh Tobias with a two-out, walk-off single to center field.
The ValleyCats did get a strong performance from their starting pitcher, Elieser Hernandez, who allowed only one hit, while striking out two batters in five innings. The right-hander, who leads the New York-Penn League with 30 strikeouts, managed to hold the Crosscutters at bay without getting as many swings and misses as he had become accustomed to, as the native of Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela allowed only three Williamsport batter to hit a ball out of the infield.
In game two, the Crosscutters scored on a sacrifice fly, and a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. However, the ValleyCats fought right back to tie the game in the top of the fourth, when Kolbey Carpenter scored on a wild pitch, then Keach Ballard drove home Bryan Muñiz with a two-out RBI single.
Unfortunately, the Crosscutters pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth to jump out to a 3-2 advantage, a lead they held for the rest of the contest.
Bobby Wernes led the way offensively for Tri-City in game one, going 2-for-2 with one double, and a walk, while Muñiz went 3-3 with a run scored in the second game.
The ValleyCats will now head 63 miles southeast of Williamsport to State College, Pa., to take on the State College Spikes in a rematch of the last two New York-Penn League Championship series. Matching up on the mound in the first game of the three-game set, which will begin at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, will be RHP Trent Thornton (1-0, 1.38) for the ValleyCats, and RHP Juan Perez (2-1, 2.87) for the Spikes.
