Lake Monsters Take Series Finale 8-1 Over Mahoning Valley

BURLINGTON, VT --- Chris Iriart went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI, Chris Kohler tossed five solid innings for the win and Bubba Derby struckout four as he retired all nine batters faced to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to an 8-1 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in New York-Penn League action Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

After being retired in his first two at bats, Iriart gave Vermont a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning with an RBI double to right field and scored on a Nick Collins RBI single for a three-run lead. Iriart then singled home Steven Pallares in the seventh inning for a 5-1 lead and then capped off a three-run eighth inning with a two-run double to leftcenter for the 8-1 advantage. Oakland's 12th-round pick in this year's draft out of the University of Houston, Iriart is now 8-for-20 (.400) with runners in scoring postion and a team-high 17 RBI this season.

Kohler allowed all three hits that the Scrappers had on the night, a groundball single to rightfield by the second batter of the game (Ka'ai Tom) and a pair of bunt singles in the third and fifth innings. Mahoning Valley got its only run of the night in the third on a Silento Sayles leadoff bunt single, two stolen bases and a Mark Mathias sacrifice fly. Kohler (2-0) walked two and had four strikeouts over five innings to earn the victory.

Derby retired the Scrappers in order in each of the three innings that he worked, striking out one in the sixth, one in the seventh and the final two batters of the eighth. A sixth-round pick out of San Diego State, Derby has nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings over his first two appearances for the Lake Monsters. James Naile had one strikeout in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the Vermont victory.

Eight of the nine batters in the Lake Monsters lineup had at least one hit on the night, including two hits for Seth Brown including an RBI single in the first inning to give Vermont a quick 2-0 lead. Mikey White extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 1-for-2 with two walks, a sacrifice fly, two runs and two RBI in his five plate appearances.

The victory gave Vermont two wins in the three-game series with Mahoning Valley (6-14), the Lake Monsters first three-game series win of the season after being swept once and losing two-of-three four times. It was also the 10th time in 20 games that Vermont (8-12) has scored five or more runs, including six of the last eight games.

The Lake Monsters continue the homestand on Saturday at 6:05 pm when they begin a three-game series with the West Virginia Black Bears, their first year in the league after moving from Jamestown, New York. It is TD Bank Photo Night with fans having the opportunity to have their picture taken with a Vermont player and CHAMP when the gates open at 5:00 pm.
