Cyclones Fall in Extras, 6-5

FISHKILL, NY - July 10, 2015 - The Cyclones had their five game winning streaked snapped at the hands of the Hudson Valley Renegades thanks to a 6-5 loss in 12 innings on Friday night. Brooklyn rallied from a three-run defecit late in the game, but eventually fell in extra frames.

After being held without a run on Thursday night, the Renegades wasted little time getting on the scoreboard this evening. Hudson Valley shortstop Michael Russell worked a one-out walk and then came around to score on a booming double off the bat of Matt Dacey to give the 'Gades the early 1-0 lead.

Brooklyn responded immediately, knotting the game in the top of the second inning. David Thompson led off the frame with a ground ball that scooted past Dacey, the Hudson Valley third baseman, for a two-base error. The Cyclones then used a pair of outs, a grounder from Zach Mathieu that advanced the runner and a sac fly from Oswald Carraballo, to knot the game at 1-1.

In the top of the third, the Cyclones struck again, to take an early lead. Jose Garcia started the frame with a leadoff double and advanced to third on a bloop single from Branden Kaupe that put runners on the corners with nobody out. With Tucker Tharp batting, Hudson Valley starter Roel Ramirez uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Garcia to trot home from third with the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the frame the Renegades continued the see-saw scoring, drawing even thanks to a two-out rally. After striking out the first two batters, Matt Blackham ran into trouble after plunking Michael Russell. The Renegades speedster stole second base and then came around to score on Dacey's second RBI double of the game to draw Hudson Valley even at 2-2.

Both teams traded zeroes in the fourth inning before Hudson Valley took the lead in the fifth and chase Blackham from the game. The righthander walked a pair of runners and allowed a single, but had two outs in the inning and was on the verge of escaping unscathed, but Manny Sanchez had a two-out, two-RBI single to give Hudson Valley a 4-2 lead. That was the end of the line for Blackham, as Ruben Reyes was summoned from the Cyclones bullpen. The southpaw allowed an inherited runner to score, but Oswald Caraballo gunned down Sanchez at the plate for the final out of the frame and keeping the Renegades lead at 5-2

Caraballo's great defensive play would prove pivotal, as in he top of the seventh Brooklyn would rally to draw even. Zach Mathieu started the inning with a solo blast on the first pitch he saw to slice the deficit to 5-3. Caraballo and Pedro Perez then kept things going with back-to-back singles. With Garcia at the plate, Renegades backstop Danny De La Calle allowed a passed ball to skip through and moved both runners into scoring position. But reliever Justin McCalvin locked in, striking out the next two batters he faced and was - like Blackham earlier - on the verge of escaping unscathed. But Tucker Tharp hit a slow roller to third base for an infield single that plated Caraballo, but Renegades third baseman Matt Dacey made his second costly error of the game and threw wildly over the first baseman's head, allowing Perez to come around to score as well and knot the game at 5-5.

It seemed like the Brooklyn comeback would be for naught, as Hudson Valley loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with only on out, but Christian Montgomery came out of the bullpen to strike out Cade Gotta and Nic Wilson to leave the bags full and keep the score knotted. The righthander remained in the game to pitch a scoreless eighth inning, and has now struck out 16 batters in his 8.0 innings of work this season.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Renegades loaded the bases once again, and once again the Cyclones were able to escape the jam, this time in a less conventional way. Corey Taylor pitched the ninth for the Cyclones and allowed a one-out triple to Matt Dacey, his third extra base hit of the night. Taylor was then ordered to intentionally walk the next two batters to load the bases with one out. Cyclones manager Tom Gamboa then instructed Caraballo to come in from left field as a fifth infielder with Nic Wilson at the plate. The Hudson Valley first baseman proceeded to ground into a 6-6-3 double play to squash the threat and send the game into extra innings.

In extras, both teams had opportunities to score including the Cyclones who had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the 12th, but failed to score. But in the bottom of the 12th the Renegades walked off with a win. Nicco Blank (0-2) came out of the pen and quickly found himself in trouble. Cade Gotta started the frame with a single to right field before stealing second. Joe McCarthy then worked a walk to put two runners aboard with nobody out. Angel Moreno then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by David Thompson, who tried to make a throw to third to get the lead runner, but the throw eluded Alfredo Reyes for an error and allowed the game-winning run to score.

The Cyclones will look to return to their winning ways on Saturday evening for Star Wars Night at MCU Park. First pitch is set for 6:00 PM when Jose Celas (0-1) takes the mound for Brooklyn.
