-SPIKES LOOK FOR SERIES WIN TONIGHT: Tonight, the State College Spikes continue their 10th Season in Central PA with the rubber match of a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Connecticut is the first non-Pinckney Division opponent to venture into State College this season, and this evening's game concludes the first half of State College's six-game homestand. The Tri-City ValleyCats, who have been the Spikes' opponents in each of the last two NYPL Championship Series, come to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Saturday through Monday. All-time, the Spikes are 12-16 against the Tigers, including a 6-7 record in games played at Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: Casey Grayson extended his on-base streak to a New York-Penn League-leading 18 games with a second-inning double, but that was one of just two State College Spikes hits as they fell to the Connecticut Tigers, 7-2, on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Grayson's two-base hit to left-center field also set up the first Spikes (9-10) run. After a groundout moved him to third, the University of Houston product scored on Cole Lankford's RBI groundout to bring State College within one. Lankford then drove in the other Spikes run in the ninth with a two-out double down the right-field line. However, Connecticut got a two-run homer from Christin Stewart, the Detroit Tigers' 2015 first-round draft choice, in the opening frame to take the lead. The Tigers then pulled away for the victory, adding two runs on a State College error in the sixth, another in the seventh on a Stewart sacrifice fly, and the last two runs on A.J. Simcox's single in the eighth. The game was delayed one hour, 13 minutes at the outset by rainstorms that passed through Central PA, and the loss ended the Spikes' three-game winning streak.
-MARTINEZ GETS BALL FOR SPIKES: RIght-hander Dailyn Martinez makes the start on the mound tonight for State College. Martinez comes off a pair of outstanding appearances, tossing seven shutout innings at Mahoning Valley on June 26 for the win before earning another victory with six innings of one-run ball against West Virginia last Friday. The Santiago, Dominican Republic native nas not allowed an earned run over his last 13 innings of work, and has held hitters to an 0-for-8 performance with runners on base and two outs this season. Martinez picked up a pair of wins, including the victory in the deciding third game of the Appy League Championship Series, to give Johnson City the title last season. The righty's home ERA was 3.41 last year, as opposed to a 6.26 mark posted on the road.
-HALL HEADS TO HILL FOR TIGERS: Left-hander Matt Hall gets his third start of the year for Connecticut tonight. Hall, the sixth-round draft choice of the Detroit Tigers out of Missouri State in 2015, has gone a total of seven innings for the NYPL's Tigers this season, including three scoreless frames against Vermont on Saturday in his last start. The Lee's Summit, MO native made his professional debut for the Gulf Coast League Tigers on June 23, yielding one run in three innings of work. Whle at Missouri State, Hall was a teammate of former Spikes Nick Petree, Luke Voit and Cody Schumacher at various times. The southpaw was also drafted on the same day as teammate Tate Matheny, son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who went to the Red Sox in the fourth round.
-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson has reached base in all 17 games he has played so far to post the longest active streak in the New York-Penn League. Grayson extended his string with a fourth-inning single last night, which was the Spikes' first hit of the game. The University of Houston product still leads the NYPL in batting average with a .397 mark, and his .479 on-base percentage also tops the league.
-SPIKE MARKS: Outfielder Orlando Olivera joined the Spikes from the GCL Cardinals on Tuesday...Olivera drove in 10 runs over 10 games in the GCL this year...Landon Beck is fourth in the NYPL with a 1.13 ERA...Grayson is hitting .583 with runners in scoring position and two outs this season...Leobaldo Pina is hitting .400 in that situation
