Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - After a fast start the Lowell Spinners entered the game batting just .184 for the month of July. It did not get any better for Lowell Friday night as the Spinners picked up just three hits en route to their second straight loss and sixth in the month of July, 3-0, at LeLacheur Park.
Scoreless through five innings, West Virginia (9-11) broke through in the sixth inning after a one-out double down the first base line by Mitchell Tolman. A two-out single up the middle from Ulises Montilla put the Black Bears ahead, 1-0.
The Black Bears broke the game open in the eighth inning. Tolman tripled to lead off the inning but was left there with one out as the Spinners played the infield in. A fly ball to mid-centerfield followed and as Luis Alexander Basabe settled under to try and make the play at home, he mishandled the ball as it fell to the ground allowing Tolman to score. A double from Logan Hill followed but the combination of Basabe to Rivera nailed Montilla at the plate. The stop-gap was only temporary however as Albert Baur followed with a single to left to give West Virginia a 3-0 lead.
The Spinners would pick up their third hit of the night on a lead-off single by Alex McKeon to start the ninth, but Victor Acosta went down swinging and Chad De La Guerra grounded into a double play to end the game.
Dioscar Romero (1-2, 4.11) was fantastic in his longest start of the season, allowing just one run on three hits, walking one over 5.2 innings. He struck out two but was stuck with the loss as the Spinners could not generate any offense. Logan Boyd was charged with two runs in two innings of relief, striking out one, while Edwar Garcia pitched 1.1 scoreless to give the Spinners a chance in the ninth.
The Lowell offensive funk continued as hits from Basabe, McKeon and Jordon Austin were all the Spinners would manage.
The home stand will continue Saturday as the Spinners welcome the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to Lowell for a three-game set, highlighted by Star Wars Night and the first Scout Night Sleepover of the season. Luis Ramos (1-1, 5.31) gets the ball for a 5:05 first pitch.
