Auburn Doubledays News Release
BATAVIA, NY - Auburn scored two runs in the first inning and didn't trail from that point forward as it defeated Batavia 13-1 on the road at Dwyer Stadium.
In the first inning with one out, Max Schrock singled into left for the Doubledays first hit. The next four hitters all walked as Auburn took a 2-0 lead in the first. The Doubledays added a run to go up 3-0 in the second after Andrew Stevenson knocked in Edwin Lora with a ground out to third.
An inning later in the third, Auburn improved its lead to 4-0. Rhett Wiseman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then stole second. The 3rd round pick moved to third on a single from David Kerian and eventually scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ian Sagdal.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, the Doubledays scored again in the sixth. Edwin Lora led off with a double down the left field line. The shortstop later scored on a single into right off the bat of Schrock to give Auburn a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Batavia notched its first hit of the night. With two outs and none on, Giovanny Alfonzo singled up the middle just past a diving Lora. Aflonzo then came around to score on a bloop double for Stone Garrett into left center to put the game at 5-1.
The Doubledays went up 7-1 in the seventh off four singles and then took a 10-1 lead on a single, a hit by pitch, and a walk in the eighth.
Heading into the final frame, Auburn led 10-1, but quickly went up by double digits. The Doubledays scored three runs on four singles and a walk in the final inning to go up 13-1. Tommy Peterson came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and gave up one hit before closing the door.
Jefry Rodriguez was dominant for Auburn en route to his first win with the Doubledays this season. The righty's line was 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 8 K's. Rodriguez had a no-hitter with two outs in the sixth before he gave up a single to Alfonzo.
Something interesting to note, Auburn had a runner in scoring position in every inning today, but did leave 13 men on base.
The Doubledays host the Staten Island Yankees Saturday at 7:05 PM for the first of a three-game series. Erick Fedde is scheduled to make his fourth start for Auburn this season. It will also be a special "Thirsty Thursday" as this past Thursday's game was postponed.
