Unbeaten Week Ends Regular Season
April 7, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
The Fresno Falcons completed the 2002-2003 regular season with three victories and a shootout loss as they strung together their longest unbeaten streak since winning four in a row in late January.
The week began on Tuesday at Selland Arena with Fresno beating the Bakersfield Condors for just the second time in regulation this season through 16 meetings by a score of 7-5. In the home finale on Wednesday the Falcons upended the Idaho Steelheads, 4-2, in a preview of their upcoming first round Taylor Cup Playoff series.
The club then traveled down to Long Beach to finish out the campaign with a pair of games against the Ice Dogs. Fresno overcame a total of four one-goal deficits on Friday night before eventually succumbing in a shootout, 5-4. They then broke open a tie game on Saturday with a pair of goals 1:14 apart early in the third on their way to a 4-2 victory.
The Falcons' final result through 72 regular season games is a fourth place finish with a record of 35-28-9 and 79 points, 12 points behind the third-place Condors.
PORTER CAPS SEASON WITH 100TH CAREER GOAL
Kris Porter reached an impressive career milestone during the final game of the regular season when his game-winning tally on Saturday marked the 100th goal of his four-year professional career. The Falcons' leading scorer finished in a tie for fifth in the league scoring race with 74 points on 35 goals and 39 assists. The 35 goals were the third most in the league as the reigning Taylor Cup Playoffs MVP became the first Fresno player to crack the top five in scoring since former Falcon Craig Lyons and current player/assistant coach Glen Gulutzan finished numbers four and five, respectively, at the end of the 1996-97 campaign.
TITLE DEFENSE PLAYOFF RALLY APRIL 14TH AT THE ELBOW ROOM
Falcons fans will have the chance to deliver their best playoff wishes to the team in person during a playoff rally on Monday, Apr. 14th, at the Elbow Room in Fig Garden Village from 6 p.m. â 8 p.m. The Title Defense rally will be held after the Falcons return from playing Games One and Two of their best-of-seven first round series in Idaho against the Steelheads. Fresno will host Games Three and Four of the series at Selland Arena on Wednesday, Apr. 16, at 7 p.m. and Friday, Apr. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
Fresno will practice this week at Gateway Ice Center on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. and on Wednesday at 10 a.m. They travel to Boise on Wednesday evening to continue preparations for Games One and Two on Friday and Saturday.
