Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – In the Crease and Just Hockey magazine have honored Dean Larson with their Best Player award for the 2002-03 season.

Larson, who has decided to retire at age 33 after eight seasons with the Anchorage Aces in the WCHL, finished in a tie for second with linemate Yvan Corbin in the league scoring race at 84 points, one behind Bakersfield's Paul Willett. Larson scored his 28th goal of the year and the 259th of his career in his final game, a 6-4 loss at San Diego Saturday. His 56 assists ranked third in the WCHL, behind Willett and Scott Swanson of Idaho. Larson holds the top spot in every major statistical offensive category, with 788 points, 259 goals, 525 assists, and 522 games played in the regular season.

Corbin placed third in the voting for Best Player but landed a spot on the ITC/Just Hockey all-WCHL first team. Interestingly, even though he also earned the "110 percent award," Larson only garnered second team all-WCHL honors from ITC and Just Hockey magazine, both publications that are headquartered in Connellsville, Pennsylvania.

Anchorage completed its 2002-03 season at 21-46-5 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1996, but went 9-7-3 under the direction of Perry Florio, who took over as head coach February 20 after the Aces began the year 12-39-2.
