Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, Ill. (April 1, 2010) - Tyler Weiman carried a shutout into the 56th minute on Thursday night as the Lake Erie Monsters finished off the Peoria Rivermen 3-1 at Carver Arena. Cam Paddock accounted for Peoria's only goal while Weiman finished with 25 saves in the win.
The Rivermen remain four points back of the Milwaukee Admirals for the final playoff spot in the West Division with only five games remaining. The two teams will meet head-to-head on Friday at 7 p.m. and again on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Lake Erie built themselves a 3-0 lead with goals from T.J. Hensick, Brian Willsie and Mark Oliver over the first two periods. The Rivermen fell behind just 2:21 into the game when Hensick banged home a power-play goal. Ben Bishop was able to stop Ryan Stoa's shot but when he lunged for the rebound, the puck squeaked through to Hensick parked at the side of the goal. It was the 20th of the season for Hensick and the first of two points on the night.
Willsie's goal came a mere 39 seconds into the second period. With the Monsters offense working the puck around the Rivermen zone, Willsie spun a wrist shot - through a screen - past Bishop for his team-leading 25th goal of the year.
The Rivermen had chances shortly thereafter on two separate power plays but finished the night 0-for-3 thanks to Weiman. He stopped Pascal Pelletier with a sprawling stop just before denying five jabs by Brett Sonne and Julian Talbot all inside the first five minutes of the second.
Peoria was outshot 17-8 in the second and 29-26 overall in the game. At 14:47, Oliver pushed the Monsters ahead 3-0 with a goal in his professional debut. The Hobey Baker nominee at the University of Northern Michigan wristed it in from the bottom of the left circle from Stoa and Willsie.
Paddock's goal came at 15:52 of the third and extended his goal-scoring streak to four games. Adam Cracknell's shot generated a rebound for Paddock to covert on a two-on-one. The goal set a new career-high for Paddock with his 13th.
Bishop was brought to the bench for an extra attacker in the final 3 minutes but neither team scored again. Bishop finished with 26 saves and saw his six-game winning streak come to an end.
The Monsters and Rivermen will meet again on Saturday night at Carver Arena in Peoria's regular season home finale. Poison front man Bret Michaels will perform following the game that begins at 7 p.m. It's also UFS Downtown Outlet Center Fan Appreciation Night. Thousands of dollars in prizes will be given away to fans throughout the game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Mitch Love players card courtesy of Arby's.
