
Generals Get Huge Win Over Bloomington

FLINT, MI - Brian Smolinski scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Flint Generals to a 6-4 International Hockey League victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder at Perani Arena on Tuesday night.
The win moved the 28-31-3-4 Generals to within six points of Bloomington for the fourth and final playoff spot. With 10 games left in their season, the Generals have two game in hand on Bloomington and face the PrairieThunder two more times, including this Saturday in Bloomington. The Generals return to action Friday at home against the two time IHL defending champion Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30 p.m.
The Generals owned a 3-1 advantage after the first period on goals by Mike Olynyk, Smolinski and Dan Lapointe. Olynyk's goal came at the 13:17 mark with an assist to Pascal Rheaume. Smolinski then scored two minutes later on an assist by Steve Silver and John Mori. Bill Bagron scored on a rebound shot for Bloomington's only goal.
Flint increased the lead to 6-3 after two periods on goals by Smolinski, Chris Bogas and John Ronan. Smolinski scored the first goal of the period with 17:26 remaining on assists by Jamie Schaafsma and Mori. PrairieThunder goals were scored by John Snowden and Robin Gomez.
Bloomington scored the only goal of the third period when John Snowden scored his second of the night at the 7:45 mark. The Generals faced some tense moments at the end when they were forced to kill of two straight penalties in the last four minutes of the game. The Generals were 7 for 7 on the penalty kill while going 1 for 3 on the powerplay.
Sergei Zvyagin and Rob Nolan split time between the pipes for the Generals, with Zvyagin picking up the win. Andrew Martin took the loss in net for Bloomington.
