Kansas City Monarchs News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - Maikel Jova singled home the game-winning run against T-Bones closer Andy Shipman (0-1) to cap off a two-run ninth inning as the Lincoln Saltdogs (5-6) came from behind to defeat Kansas City (6-5), 4-3, in the completion of a suspended game from Tuesday night.
Kansas City took an early 1-0 lead against Alex Maestri in the first inning on Tuesday night with an RBI double by Ray Sadler. The score held until the fourth when the Saltdogs tied it at one when Curt Smith connected for an RBI single off Devin Anderson with one out. Then, in the top of the seventh, a two-run single by Nick Farnsworth off reliever Thomas Palica re-claimed the lead for the T-Bones at 3-1.
During the seventh-inning stretch, Mother Nature intervened and forced the Lincoln grounds crew to cover the field. As a result, the game resumed on Wednesday morning with Lincoln batting in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Dahman took over for Anderson and threw a scoreless frame before the Saltdogs pulled within one in the eighth on an RBI single by Gavin Dickey.
Shipman entered in the ninth and surrendered a leadoff double to former Kansas City third baseman, Brandon Jones. A groundout by Joe Ramos moved Jones to third before the next batter, Blake Gailen, tied the game with a sacrifice fly. After the next two pitches led to consecutive singles for Lincoln, Jova singled home pinch-runner Vance Albitz to win the game for the Saltdogs, 4-3.
The blown save for Shipman was his first of the season. He suffered the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. Rookie Nick Schreiber earned the victory after throwing two scoreless innings for Lincoln.
The two teams will begin their regularly-scheduled game at approximately 12:40 p.m. as Kansas City sends T.J. Large (1-1, 5.40) to face Lindsay Gulin (0-3, 8.17) and the Saltdogs.
