Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

EL PASO, TX---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains got back on track Wednesday night in El Paso, scoring six runs in the fourth inning one night after losing by 15 runs to the El Paso Diablos to beat El Paso 9-6 in the third game of this four-game series.

Captains shortstop Bryan Frichter went 2-5 with two RBIs, giving him a team-high seven in the first three games of the series. He also had six assists in the field and helped turn a fifth-inning double play. Frichter got the Captains on the board in the top of the first when he reached base on an error to El Paso second baseman Antoin Gray, which scored Joey Gathright and Bryan Sabatella.

El Paso tied it up in the bottom of the frame when first baseman Kyle Nichols hit a two-run homer to left in the first inning for the second straight night, this time off Captains starter Ryan DiPietro. But DiPietro (3-0) would settle in, scattering 12 hits in six plus innings, to become the first Shreveport-Bossier hurler to reach three wins and just the fifth pitcher in the American Association to do so.

The Captains would give DiPietro all the support he needed when they sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth, plating six runs. Alex Cowart drew a bases loaded walk from former Captain, El Paso starter Cardoza Tucker. Robert Perry would add a run on an RBI groundout. Brian Peterson scored the third run of the frame, coming in on another error by Gray. Cowart would score on a balk, then Bryan Sabatella got in on the act with an RBI single. An RBI double by Fricther would make it an 8-2 Captains advantage.

El Paso would make it interesting with a run in the sixth on a Kory Drew RBI single and two in the seventh thanks to a Chad Gabriel RBI double and a Manual Mejia sacrifice fly. Shreveport-Bossier took the lead 9-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth when Gathright scored in the top of the frame on an Andres Rodriguez single. Rodriguez had another strong night at the plate for the Captains, going three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.

Justin Young came in to pitch the last of the ninth. With one out he walked Gabriel. Then with two outs and two strikes on Mejia, gave up an RBI double down the left field line. After walking Gerardo Avila, Young was lifted for Captains closer Dan Griffin. Griffin threw just two pitches to Gray, before retiring him on a ground out to the shortstop Frichter to end the game.

Captains relievers Mark Haynes and Young combined to throw 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits but pitching well enough to protect the Shreveport-Bossier lead.

The fourth and final game of the series with El Paso takes place Thursday, May 26 at 8:05 p.m. local time/7 CST. Captains starter Richard Salazar will face off against the Diablos' Wardell Starling as Shreveport-Bossier looks to win there second straight series on the road.
