Garcia's Strong Start Sends Sox Past Pheasants 4-2

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox scored only four runs on Wednesday night, tying their lowest output of the season, but it was more than enough as Sox starter Justin Garcia allowed only two runs off six hits in seven innings of work as the Sox defeated the Sioux Falls Pheasants 4-2 in front of 1,346 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.

Garcia (1-1) got his first win and lowered his ERA by two-and-a-half points. Pheasants starter Brad Stone (1-2) got the loss, allowing all four runs off nine hits in six innings. Sox closer Corey Bass got his third save of the season and second in a row with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Sox took a first inning lead for the second straight night as Cyle Hankerd doubled with two outs and was brought home by a Lee Cruz RBI single. Benji Johnson followed with an RBI double for a 2-0 lead.

Sioux Falls got their first run in the fourth inning as Brandon Sing singled, went to third on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly for a one-run game. Amarillo responded in the bottom half of the fourth as Van Pope and Tim Alberts led off with singles, followed by a two-run double by Chris Nash for a 4-1 Sox lead.

The Pheasants got another run in the seventh as Francisco Leandro scored on a Joe Anthonsen RBI single for a 4-2 score.

Sox reliever Chad Povich pitched a perfect eighth, while Corey Bass got through the ninth to give the Sox a 4-2 victory.

With the win, the Sox improve to 4-8 while the Pheasants fall to 4-9. On Thursday, Amarillo will take on Sioux Falls for the final game of the three-game set at 7:05pm, with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 5:50pm on Ustream, via www.amarillosox.com. The game will be Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark, featuring two beers for $3.00 and $1.00 canned sodas. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
