Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - Every member of Greg Tagert's starting lineup had at least one hit and seven of the nine had at least two as the Gary SouthShore RailCats pounded out 19 total en route to a 10-2 win and a 2-1 series victory over the first place Wichita Wingnuts at U. S. Steel Yard Wednesday afternoon.

RailCats righty Scott Shaw (2-1) picked up where Derrick Gordon left off in yesterday's contest and stretched the scoreless streak by 'Cats starting pitchers to 13. Shaw allowed just five hits and struck out six Wingnuts over his six innings of work to give the RailCats their first home series win of the year as the 'Cats improved to 6-7 on the season.

The RailCats took out their recent frustration at the plate on the Wingnuts pitching staff Wednesday exploding for 11 runs on 19 hits, 17 of which were singles. Igniting for five runs and eight hits in the first two innings, the RailCats never looked back and kept working to extend the lead scoring in every frame except two, the third and the fourth. Brad Boyer, Cristian Guerrero, and Jeff Beachum, the heart of the RailCats order, each contributed three hits and two RBI in the contest, while catcher Mike Valadez added two hits including a double and designated hitter Mike Rohde tallied a bases loaded triple in the eighth.

Five of the first six batters singled to start the first for the 'Cats as Guerrero singled through the left side to put the RailCats on top 1-0 and Kyle Haines drove single to right push the advantage to two. Three runs crossed the plate in the second as Guerrero drew a bases loaded walk, Beachum pitched in with an RBI single and a Haines sacrifice fly gave the 'Cats a 5-0 lead.

The RailCats extended the lead in the fifth on a single by Adam Klein and plated three more in the six on Rohde's triple to make it a 9-0 ballgame.

The Wingnuts broke up the shutout in the seventh on a Jorge Cortes two RBI double but the RailCats answered with single tallies in the seventh on a Beachum single and in the eighth on a grounder from Klein.

Lefty Trent Lare (0-1) took the loss for Wichita allowing 6 runs, five earned, on 11 hits in five innings. While the afternoon belonged to the home team, the Wingnuts scored four late runs in the contest including two-run homer from cleanup hitter Juan Richardson

The RailCats (6-7) load the busfor north of the border as they get set to open a three-game series in Winnipeg on Friday at 7 p.m. All the action can be heard live on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore as Broadcaster Tim Calderwood calls every inning on the road for the 'Cats. The RailCats return to U. S. Steel Yard on Friday, June 3 for Boyband Night featuring music and more from bands like N'SYNC, the Backstreet Boys and more as the RailCats welcome the Winnipeg Goldeyes for a three-game series.
