Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

During the first week of the season, the Winnipeg Goldeyes found themselves on the right side of close games. Over the past week, they have found themselves on the wrong side of close games.

The Goldeyes (7-6) saw 6-4 lead evaporate in the seventh inning and fell 8-6 the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (7-6) before 2,487 fans at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.

The loss is the Goldeyes third consecutive defeat and Winnipeg has dropped five of their past six games. Three of the losses have been by two runs or less.

"Baseball is a game of cycles," said Goldeyes second baseman Price Kendall, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI in the game. "You have good ones and you have bad ones. You just hope that you have more good ones than bad ones.

"It's still early. Everybody is still trying to figure some things out. It's only 13 games into the season. In the long run we are going to be okay."

Fargo scored four times in the seventh inning, including three times to take the lead off eventual losing pitcher Kevin Light. Down by one, Fargo catcher Phil Britton doubled in Jim Fasano and Carlo Cota to give the RedHawks the lead for the first time in the game. They would add another before the inning was over.

"Fargo is really tough at home," said Kendall. "They just don't quit at home."

Winnipeg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning when the Goldeyes used three singles to take the lead. Winnipeg ran the lead to 4-0 in the third when Wes Long scored on a Luis Alen sac fly and extended the advantage to 5-0 in the fourth when Kendall singled in Justin Bass. But, it wouldn't last.

Fargo mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs. Jesse Hoorelbeke hit a solo home run to lead off the frame and Cota and Britton touched home plate off a Brian Ruggiano single. The RedHawks cut Winnipeg's lead to just 5-4 an inning later when Nic Jackson hit a solo home run to right field.

Winnipeg would reply via the long ball in the sixth inning when Kody Kaiser hit his first home run of the season. It was a high fly ball that the wind pushed over the right field fence, giving Winnipeg a short-lived 6-4 lead.

Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs and striking out three.

Nick Di Napoli picked up the win for Fargo, Light took the loss for Winnipeg and Casey Hoorelbeke pitched the last two innings to get the save.

Winnipeg will be out to salvage the final game in the series tomorrow night. The Goldeyes send righty Erick Carrillo (0-0- 5.19) to the mound, while Fargo counters with Zach Ward (1-1, 2.77). Game time is 7 p.m. and the game can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290, starting with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m.
