LOUISVILLE, KY - Luis Escobar earned his first Triple-A win after surrendering a home run on his first pitch, Pablo Reyes went yard for the fourth time and the Tribe topped Louisville in the rubber game of their series on Wednesday night, 5-2. The game was called due to inclement weather in the middle of the eighth inning.
The Indians (33-23) won for the 11th time in their last 13 road games thanks to five unanswered runs, four charged to Bats starter Keury Mella. Escobar gave up a leadoff home run to Scott Schebler in the first, but Reyes' blast with one away in the second evened the score.
Two innings later, the Tribe moved in front with four straight singles off Mella (L, 4-5). Will Craig, Reyes and JB Shuck loaded the bases for Jake Elmore, who pounded a 1-1 offering into left field for a two-run knock.
Indy added another run in the fifth to go up 4-1. Jason Martin collected his first of two doubles in the game, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Corey Dickerson sacrifice fly. Dickerson chipped in a run-scoring single before the stretch, plating Martin who reached second base when Schebler lost a high fly ball in the ominous skies.
The Bats (24-35) brought the tying run to the dish in the seventh against Yefry Ramirez but could only push one run across on a wild pitch.
Escobar (W, 1-0) settled in after serving up the leadoff homer. He tossed 5.0 innings and scattered two hits and three walks with one punchout.
Craig's single in the fourth extended his hitting streak to 11 games, the longest by an Indian this season. He has reached base safely in 19 consecutive contests, the fourth-longest active streak in the International League.
Indy has won four consecutive road series for the first time since the 2015 campaign.
The Indians continue their road trip with the opener of a five-game series on Thursday night in Toledo. Cam Vieaux (1-0, 6.30) will square off against Tyler Alexander (1-7, 7.74). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
