Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets held a lead but once again lost to the Rochester Red Wings, 6-2, on Wednesday morning turned afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium in front of a season-high crowd of 10,736.
Syracuse (29-29) started the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Colton Plaia led off with a double, and Arismendy Alcantara singled. Lewis Thorpe got the next two batters but then threw a wild pitch with two outs, allowing Plaia to score from third for a 1-0 Mets lead.
Rochester (22-33) quickly answered in the top of the fourth. Zander Wiel walked, and Jake Cave hit a two-run home run to right field to give Rochester a 2-1 advantage.
The Red Wings added two more runs in the sixth. Wiel singled, and Cave walked. Brent Rooker then lined a double to right field to score both runners and extend the Rochester lead to three, 4-1.
The Mets got back within two in the eighth. Danny Espinosa hit a two-out home run over the right-field wall, trimming the deficit to two, 4-2. The homer was the ninth of the season for Espinosa.
The Red Wings added an exclamation point on the day in the ninth. Wynston Sawyer walked, and Drew Maggi singled. Luis Arraez followed with a ground-rule double to right to score Sawyer for a 5-2 lead. Then after a groundout and intentional walk, Jake Cave singled to the right side of the infield to bring home Maggi and push the score to 6-2.
Syracuse and Rochester conclude their four-game series on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
