RailRiders Sweep Doubleheader, 3-0 & 4-0
June 5, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
On a night featuring the 2019 debut of the Buffalo Wings, it was the RailRiders that delivered a double order of great pitching performances. Chance Adams went the distance to defeat the Buffalo Wings, 3-0, in game one while Nestor Cortes led Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to a 4-0 victory in the night cap, Wednesday at Sahlen Field.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitching was absolutely dominant in the twinbill sweep. Adams allowed just three singles and a walk in his 89-pitch complete game. Throw in caught stealing in the third and an inning-ending doubleplay in the fifth and the righty faced just two over the minimum.
Cortes was equally if not even more impressive. In six innings of work, the righty struck out eight and allowed just one base runner, a single from Jordan Patterson in the third inning. He retired the final 11 batters he faced.
The great outings spoiled the 2019 debut of the Bisons alter-ego, the Buffalo Wings. With new uniforms paying tribute to 'The Flat' wing, the Herd took the field for the first 'Wings Wednesday,' presented by (716) Food and Sport.
Shawn Morimando gave the Wings another quality start in game one but suffered the defeat. He allowed three runs in six innings of work and struck out five.
RailRiders' second baseman Breyvic Valera opened the scoring in game one with an RBI-double in the second inning, scoring the red-hot Trey Amburgey. Former Blue Jay farmhand Ryan McBroom then added a sacrifice fly in the frame for the 2-0 advantage.
Brad Miller completed the scoring with his RBI-single in the top half of the sixth inning.
In game two, it was Valera that got the RailRiders started once again...and again, it was in the third inning. He hit a two-run home run off Connor Fisk for his seventh of the year. Kyle Higashioka then went deep on the very next pitch, also his seventh home run of the year.
The Bisons were just 1-for-22 at the plate in game two, with 10 strikeouts.
The teams will wrap up their six-game in four-day series on Thursday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Sahlen Field.
