The Red Wings were trying to find their groove offensively but Indianapolis starter Mitch Keller kept their bats in check - only allowing one hit through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth the Indians got a solo home run from Kevin Kramer for a 2-0 lead.
The Red Wings got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Jaylen Davis swung at the first pitch of the at bat and hit a solo shot to right-center, landing right next to the Rochester Regional Health sign. Davis' home run made his season total to 14 long balls since joining the Wings June 19. Jake Cave delivered a single and advanced to second and third on wild pitches to get into scoring position. Wilin Rosario hit a sacrifice fly to score Cave and the Wings tied the game at 2-2.
The Indians answered right back in the top of the fifth. Back to back singles produced a pair of runs and a 4-2 Indians lead.
Stewart was replaced in the fifth inning with two runners on, with Fernando Romero was called on in relief. Stewart finished with 4.2 innings pitched allowing five hits, four earned runs, one walk, while striking out two batters. He threw 73 pitches, 44 for strikes.
In the bottom of the fifth the Wings responded with a two-out rally. Drew Maggi got the rally started with a two run home run to left field that landed in the visiting bullpen. Maggi tied the game at 4-4, with his 10th home run of the year. Nick Gordon hit a double and scored on a Davis double, giving the Wings their first lead of the day at 5-4.
Keller threw 4.2 innings allowing six hits, five earned runs, one walk and striking out five. Keller threw 98 pitches, 58 for strikes.
The Indians opened the top of sixth with back to back hits. With runners at second and third Romero threw a wild pitch allowing the Indians to tie the game at 5-5. Romero threw another wild pitch to the next batter, giving the Indians a 6-5 lead.
Cody Allen came into relief to begin the top of the seventh. Allen worked two scoreless, hitless relief innings with two strikeouts. Jeremy Bleich, just acquired this week in a trade with the Boston organization, made his Red Wings debut with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning.
The Wings made their bid to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, against reliever Geoff Hartlieb. Rosario led off with a bloop hit down the right field line, and hustled all the way to second base to put the tying run into scoring position. Zander Wiel followed with a double, scoring Rosario to the game at 6-6. A throwing error allowed Wiel to slide into third base, putting the winning run 90 feet away with no outs. De Aza was called out on strikes, and Wynston Sawyer also struck out. Hartlieb fanned Ronald Torreyes to wriggle out of the jam and send the game into extra innings.
Zack Littell took over on the mound to start the 10th inning, and got himself into a tight spot after a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. A pop fly down the left field line deflected off the glove of De Aza, who made a long run just to get to the ball. The play was scored a fielder's choice with RBI, pushing the Indians back ahead 7-6.
NOTES:
Alejandro De Aza 's walk in the bottom of the fifth pushed his on-base streak to nine games...Drew Maggi pushed his on-base streak to 30 games with a two run home run in the fifth inning...Jaylen Davis extended his hit streak to five games with home run in the fourth inning...Wilin Rosario now has a six-game hitting streak after his ninth inning double.
