INDIANAPOLIS -- Left-hander J.A. Happ allowed just two runs over 7.2 innings to help Lehigh Valley post a 9-5 win over Indianapolis in front of 9,799 Thursday night at Victory Field.
The first-year IronPigs improve to 21-41 overall and 8-26 on the road, while the Indians drop to 29-33 on the season and 15-16 at home.
Happ (7.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 10 SO) improved to 3-5 with the win. He faced just two over the minimum through seven scoreless innings.
Lehigh Valley exploded for six runs in the second. RF Jon Knott, 3B Brennan King, LF T.J. Bohn and 2B Casey Smith recorded four straight base knocks after 1B Andy Tracy opened the frame with a walk. C Jason Jaramillo then capped the inning with a three-run double to right center.
The IronPigs added three scores in the sixth to make it 9-0. Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to center before CF Rich Thompson hammered a two-run double to left center.
Smith (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI), King (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI), Knott (2-for-4, 2 R) and Thompson (2-for-5, 1 R, 3 RBI) all registered multi-hit performances for Lehigh Valley.
The Tribe clobbered three homers after the game became lopsided. C Carlos Maldonado tagged a two-run shot in the eighth, CF Andrew McCutchen whacked a solo blast in the eighth and 1B Adam Boeve nailed a solo shot in the ninth.
McCutchen (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and 2B Josh Wilson (2-for-4, 1 R) recorded multi-hit efforts for the Indians.
Indianapolis RHP Jason Davis (5.0 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) fell to 3-7 with the loss.
The teams wrap up their eight-game season series on Friday at 7:15 p.m. LHP Brian Mazone is scheduled to start for Lehigh Valley, while RHP Ty Taubenheim is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.
