International League News And Notes

June 5, 2008 - International League (IL1) News Release

BUFFALO BISONS

BISONS COMPLETE AMAZING 9TH INNING RALLY: Buffalo trailed Rochester 6-0 in the 9th inning Wednesday night before completing another amazing rally at Dunn Tire Park. The Herd scored six in the 9th then responded with two more runs in the 10th to defeat the Red Wings, 8-7. OF Brad Snyder had and RBI-single in the 9th before producing the game-winning run with a bases-loaded single over a drawn-in outfield in the 10th inning.

OF Jason Cooper hit a pinch-hit RBI-double with two outs in the 9th before scoring the game-tying run later in the inning to force extras. Both Snyder and Cooper were in Buffalo¡¦s lineup nearly 13 months ago when the Herd defeated Pawtucket 15-14 on May 5, 2007 despite trailing 14-6 heading into the bottom of the 9th.

OFF THE SNYD: OF Brad Snyder has been the Bisons top hitter over the last week and a half. Snyder has seven multi-hit performances in his last eight starts. He is 16 for his last 31 at the plate (.516) with five doubles, seven RBI and five runs scored. Since May 26, the outfielder has raised his batting average 59 points from .203 to .262.

SWEET AND SOWERS: LHP Jeremy Sowers was named the International League Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The southpaw delivered a pair of victories for the Herd, striking out 10 and allowing just one run in 13.0 innings of work over the two starts. Sowers is 3rd in the IL with a 2.08 ERA and leads the Bisons in innings pitched (60.2) and is 2nd in strikeouts (43). He has allowed more than two runs in only two of his 10 efforts and has made six quality starts. Sowers would have a much better record than 3-4 but the Bisons have scored just 30 total runs in his 10 starts.

CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS

HOT STREAKS: OF Jerry Owens is on a hot streak as he is currently .500 (7-14) over his last five games. Owens is hitting .387 (12-31) over his last ten games. OF Jason Bourgeois is also playing well, hitting .342 (13-38) since coming off of the disabled list on May 23. RHP Matt Anderson has also pitched well of late. Anderson pitched a scoreless 9th last night that included two strikeouts. Anderson has not allowed a run in his last four games.

ROSTER MOVES: OF Dewayne Wise rejoined the Knights. Wise¡¦s contract was purchased by the White Sox on May 23. Wise appeared in three games with Chicago going 0-6 at the plate with two strikeouts and on stolen base. Wise has appeared in 43 games with the Knights this season hitting .338 with 11 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, 18 RBI, 18 walks and 12 stolen bases. Wise¡¦s .338 average is still 2nd in the IL. Wise also leads the IL in on-base percentage at .420. RHP Ehren Wassermann has been optioned back to Charlotte from Chicago. Wassermann appeared in 8 games for the Knights earlier in the year earning 6 saves. In correspondence with Wise rejoining the club, OF Thomas Collaro was transferred to Double-A Birmingham. Collaro has hit .242 (16-66) in 19 games with Knights this season with 5 home runs and 9 RBI.

ELDRED KEEPS IT UP: INF/OF Brad Eldred continues to be one of the best power hitters in the IL. Eldred is the League leader in RBI (54) and is tied for the lead in home runs (20). Eldred is also leading the League in extra base (34). Eldred is 5th in slugging percentage at .614. Eldred is also getting more playing time in the outfield.

COLUMBUS CLIPPERS

NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN: Through the first 35 games of the season, opponents were successful on 41 of 49 stolen base attempts (83.7%) against the Clippers. Since the arrival of David Wallace 26 games ago on May 9, would-be base stealers have been successful on 11 of 19 attempts (57.9%). Wallace has nabbed just under half of his opponents attempting to steal (5 of 11) while Javi Herrera has thrown out 37.5% (3 of 8) since Wallace was added to the roster. The duo has helped the Clippers climb out of last place in the IL in caught stealing efficiency (ahead of Norfolk's 21.2%). Columbus currently sits at 23.5% this season after leading the League with 40.8% in 2007.

CLIPPERS OF THE MONTH, MAY EDITION: Tyler Clippard rode the momentum of a 4-1 May to snatch the Clipper Pitcher of the Month honors. Clippard made six starts in May, posting a 1.91 ERA (33.0 IP, 23 H, 10 R, 7 ER, 12 BB, 29 K). He tallied three quality starts for the month, all three were scoreless starts, and is currently on a 14.0 scoreless innings streak over his last three. In his last four outings he has allowed just 1 ER (19.1 IP) to lower his ERA from 4.79 to 3.41. On the offensive side, Yurendell de Caster was named the Player of the Month. De Caster batted .265 (26-98) and led the team in HR (4), RBI (17), doubles (6) and games (29). He provided the eventual game winner in the bottom of the 8th of Columbus' 2-1 victory over Louisville May 27, snapping a tie with an RBI single.

HEY BATTER,BATTER: After striking out seven Syracuse Chiefs last night, the Clippers became the first team in the International League to pass

500 K this season. Columbus currently leads the League with 505 punchouts, 28 ahead of 2nd place Syracuse. The Clippers have fanned 10+ batters in a game 17 times in 61 games (28%). They are currently on pace to whiff 1,192 IL batters, a number that would shatter the franchise record of 1,039, set in 2001 (the only time Columbus ever topped 1,000).

DURHAM BULLS

WELCOME BACK: Manager Charlie Montoyo returned to the Bulls Tuesday. Hitting Coach Gary Gaetti had filled in for six games for Manager Charlie Montoyo (4-2). Montoyo left the team for Arizona, where his son Alexander had a surgical procedure performed last Thursday. Alex was born in October with a heart defect and spent his first five months in a hospital. The surgery went well, leading to Montoyo¡¦s return. The Bulls have lost both games since Montoyo¡¦s return, 7-0 and 8-1 to Richmond, falling a half-game behind the Braves for 1st place in the South Division.

HOME SWEET HOME?: Durham is 18-13 on the road and 13-16 at home after starting their current 10-game home stand at 2-4. That success on the road is more pronounced against South Division teams. The Bulls are 16-8 overall¡X4-5 at home, 12-3 on the road¡Xagainst division rivals.

SCORING MORE: Until the last two games, when the Bulls scored just one total run, Durham had scored 5 or more runs in 16 of its last 22 games, collecting 151 runs in those contests (6.86 per game). The Bulls were 16-6 over that stretch. Durham was shut out Tuesday, 7-0 by Richmond, the first time the team was shut out at home this year, and the first time overall since April 10 (1-0 at Columbus).

ON THE MOVE: Durham¡¦s transaction totals continue to rise. Ben Zobrist played a game this week before going on the DL with a shoulder injury; Andy Cannizaro replaced him on the roster a day after going to Hudson Valley. Jon Weber re-joined Durham Monday, just one day after joining the Hudson Valley roster, after John Rodriguez was released. During yesterday¡¦s game, Justin Ruggiano was recalled to replace Carlos Pena (broken left index finger). When a corresponding move is made today, Durham¡¦s transaction total for this season will be 83, compared to 97 all of last year. A total of 41 different players (including MLB rehab assignments) have played in a game for the Bulls. The multiple changes began early, in part because Durham¡¦s parent team, Tampa Bay, had nine players on the DL at one point. That number is currently at four: Pena, RHP Chad Orvella, RHP Troy Percival and OF Rocco Baldelli. Orvella had season-ending surgery on May 23.

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

MCCUTCHEN IS THE MAN IN MAY: OF Andrew McCutchen has been named Indianapolis Indians Player of the Month for May. McCutchen hit .304 with two home runs and 10 RBI during the season¡¦s second month. The 21-year-old recorded eight multi-hit performances and three multi-run efforts. McCutchen ranked 2nd in all of Triple-A Baseball with 12 stolen bases in May. He also tallied a .411 slugging percentage and .391 on-base percentage during the stretch. McCutchen ranks among the International League¡¦s leaders for stolen bases (2nd, 18), runs (T-4th, 38), hits (T-4th, 67), doubles (T-8th, 15) and walks (T-8th, 28).

BEAM KEEPS HANGING ZEROS: Tribe RHP T.J. Beam has recorded an 0.51 ERA (1 ER in 17.2 IP) over his last 11 relief appearances. The Indians have paced the IL in thefts in each of the past three seasons (163 in 2007, 180 in 2006 and 163 in 2005). The Tribe has recorded 34 swipes over the last 23 contests (1.48 pg) while its opponents have tallied just 10 (0.43 pg).

WINNING TIGHT ONES: The Indians are 14-8 in one-run games this season. The 14 wins are the most in International League in 2008. The Tribe went 17-21 in one-run contests a year ago.

LOUISVILLE BATS

1,300: Manager Rick Sweet¡¦s victory on Wednesday Night was his 1,300th as a Minor League manager. He is only the fifth active manager with 1,300 wins, joining Marc Bombard (Charlotte), Tom Kotchman (Orem), Dave Huppert (Lehigh Valley) and former Louisville Manager Dave Miley (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre). Sweet is in his 20th season as a Minor League manager and his fourth at Louisville (251-241).

HOMER: RHP Homer Bailey was pulled from his start Sunday, June 1 due to his expected recall by the Cincinnati Reds; he is scheduled to start in Philadelphia on Thursday. Bailey had two stints with the Reds last season - from June 8-July 7 he went 2-2 with a 6.99 ERA in six starts and from September 20-30 he went 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts. In 11 starts for the Bats this season, Bailey is 4-4 with a 4.04 ERA. The Phillies have yet to announce their starter for Thursday.

ROSTER UPHEAVAL: There are 13 players from Louisville¡¦s Opening Day active roster who are still with the team (Adkins, Anderson, Bailey, Cabrera, Colina, Dickerson, Green, Gil, Hanigan, Maloney, McBeth, Pettyjohn and Rosales). Last season, the Bats had a franchise record 216 transactions (April: 17, May: 47, June: 40, July: 43, Aug: 61, Sept: 10).

IL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION: The International League is inducting 27 new members into its Hall of Fame, two of which will be honored with a ceremony at Louisville Slugger Field Saturday, June 7. 1B Dale Alexander, nicknamed ¡§Moose¡¨, is one of only six men to win the Triple Crown, accomplished in 1928 with Toronto (.380 avg., 31 HR, 144 RBI). He also led the IL in hits (236) and doubles (49) in 1928. In 1929, he was the starting first baseman for Detroit and led the AL with 215 hits and knocked more extra-base hits than Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx. Alexander drove in 272 runs in his first two ML seasons, more than any player in history except Joe DiMaggio. RHP Bobby Tiefenauer was a knuckleball relief pitcher in an era where relievers weren¡¦t given much recognition and saves weren¡¦t accounted for. In 1951 as a 21-year-old with Rochester, he started 20 of 35 games and had nine complete games while posting a 2.66 ERA. Tiefenauer worked primarily out of the bullpen for the remainder of his career, both in the IL & the Majors; he led the AL in appearances two consecutive seasons while with Toronto (1957-58).

NORFOLK TIDES

THAT¡¦S A LOT OF LEFTIES: Norfolk¡¦s batters have had 802 at-bats against left-handers this season, which is more than any team in Minor League or Major League Baseball has had against lefties this season. In fact, just one other team in affiliated baseball has registered more than 700 at-bats against southpaws, as the Atlanta Braves have batted 754 times against lefties. The fewest at-bats against left-handers belong to Double-A Frisco, which has registered 267 at-bats vs. southpaws this year. Norfolk is 13-14 against left-handed starters.

STREAKING BACKSTOP: With two more hits last night, Tides catcher Omir Santos extended his hitting streak to 12 games, which is Norfolk¡¦s season-high. Over that stretch, Santos has batted .404 (19-47) with seven runs scored, and he¡¦s hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games with an at-bat. Over that 15-game stretch, Santos has upped his average from .185 to .288.

GREAT SCOTT: Tides infielder Scott Moore has hit safely in each of his last nine contests. Over that nine-game stretch, Moore has hit .378 (14-37) with a homer and four RBI, and he¡¦s collected five multi-hit games in that span. The 24-year-old has also collected 16 runs batted in over his last 22 games, and Moore has upped his average from .149 to .230 over that 22-game stretch.

PAWTUCKET RED SOX

MONSTER MASHING IN MAY: The PawSox went 19-11 in May, thanks to some of the most prolific home run hitting in team history with 49 HR in 30 games. Pawtucket batted .288 for the month and scored 182 runs (6.1 avg.). Individual leaders included Jeff Bailey (.339, 13 HR, 33 RBI), Chris Carter (.352, 10 HR, 26 RBI), Brandon Moss (.415, 5 HR, 13 RBI), Dusty Brown (.308, 4 HR, 11 RBI), and Jonathan Van Every (.253, 4 HR,

8 RBI). Here are some additional home run highlights:

„« Brandon Moss tied the team record with 3 HR on May 31 at Durham.

„« Jeff Bailey hit 2 HR in 4 games (May 12, 22, 26, and 29).

„« Jeff Bailey led off 4 games with HR (May 4, 12, 22, 26).

„« Chris Carter homered in 4 straight games (May 28-31).

„« Dusty Brown homered in 3 straight starts (May 25, 27-28).

„« Pawtucket hit 6 home runs in a game twice (May 26 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and May 31 at Durham).

„« Pawtucket hit back-to-back HR three times.

NEXT WILL MAKE IT A DOZEN: Already 11 different PawSox players have received a promotion to Boston this season. INF Jed Lowrie was the first on April 10 followed by INF Joe Thurston on April 16, RHP David Pauley on April 22, RHP Craig Hansen on April 23, RHP Bryan Corey on April 25, 1B Brandon Moss on April 25, OF Jonathan Van Every on May 14, RHP Chris Smith on May 18, RHP Bartolo Colon on May 21,

RHP Justin Masterson on June 3, and OF Chris Carter also on June 3.

PULLING RANK: The PawSox lead the International League in Team Batting (.270) but have fallen to 4th in Team ERA (3.77) after leading the League in that category as well for a few days at the end of May. Pawtucket has finished with the best ERA in the IL just once in franchise-history back in 1999 when they posted a 4.01 ERA. Pawtucket has not led the IL in Team Batting since the League expanded to 14 teams in 1998. To put their current accomplishments in perspective, the PawSox were last (14th) in Team Batting last season (.254) and 8th in Team ERA (4.05) and were 13th in both categories in 2006, 9th in both categories in 2005, and 10th in batting and 8th in pitching in 2004.

RICHMOND BRAVES

POWER SURGE: The Braves smashed a season-high five home runs in a win over Durham Wednesday. Richmond has hit 34 home runs this season.

13 of those have come on the six games of the current road trip. Richmond has home runs in a season-high seven straight games. The Braves are 19-5 in games in which they hit home runs.

MORTON MASTERING TRIPLE-A: IL ERA leader and Triple-A rookie Charlie Morton continued his run of dominating starts Tuesday at Durham. Morton tossed eight innings of one-hit shutout ball while striking out a club season-high 13 Bulls. The last time a Braves pitcher notched 13 strikeouts in a game was August 12, 2002 when Andy Pratt fanned 13, also against the Bulls. Morton has allowed one or no runs in eight of his 12 outings this season.

RESURGANCE: The Braves moved back into 1st place in the IL South with their win over the Bulls Wednesday. Richmond has won three straight games and six of their last seven after a 7-15 stretch that knocked them out of 1st and below .500. They have scored 22 runs in their last three games and have allowed just one run in the last 19 innings.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS

CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL: The Red Wings offense has hit at least one home run (13 total home runs) in seven straight games. Rochester has hit 45 home runs this season which is tied for 8th in the International League with Syracuse (Toledo leads the IL with 105 home runs).

I NEED SOME ROLAIDS: The Red Wings bullpen has been very ineffective the last 15 games, going 1-6 with five saves and a 7.28 ERA. In 47.0 innings of work, the pen has allowed 41 runs (38 earned) on 61 hits while walking 24 and striking out 62. The bullpen has seen its ERA jump from 3.01 to 3.96 in this 15 game stretch.

HIT PARADE: The Red Wings offense has heated up the last 10 games batting .307 (108-352) as a team. Rochester has scored 58 runs (5.8 runs per game) and had 10 or more hits in seven of those 10 games.

JUNE IS OUR MONTH: The Red Wings have had a winning month of June every year of the Minnesota Twins affiliation (five consecutive seasons). During the Twins affiliation Rochester holds an 81-68 record in the month of June. Since 1980, when month-to-month records started being kept, Rochester has had only four 20-win months but two of those have happened in June (1991, 20-11 record and 1986, 20-11 record). So far Rochester is 1-3 in June.

THERE¡¦S ALWAYS A FIRST TIME: The Red Wings entered play on June 1 with a 23-34 record (11 games under .500). Since 1979 when International League day-by-day records begin, no team 10 or more games under .500 entering play on June 1 has made the IL playoffs. The closest team to pull this off was the 1994 Syracuse Chiefs. Syracuse was nine games under .500 entering play on June 1 and made the playoffs.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE YANKEES

COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH: Yankees outfielders Justin Christian and Brett Gardner have provided run production for SWB all season long. Christian ranks 3rd on the team with 32 RBI and Gardner has provided 21 runs batted in, with 18 of them coming from the leadoff spot. Both have been clutch in knocking runs with runners in scoring position. 30 of Christians 32 RBI have come with runners in scoring position and 11 have come with runners in scoring position and two outs, where he is hitting .419 (6-14). Not to be outdone, 13 of Gardner¡¦s 21 knocked in have come with runners in scoring position and 14 have been with runners in scoring position and two outs where Gardner is red hot, hitting .455 (10-22) on the year.

ONE SHY OF A DOZEN: Tuesday night¡¦s starter Phil Coke became the 11th different starting pitcher for the Yankees in 2008, joining Dan Giese, Alan Horne, Kei Igawa, Jeff Karstens, Ian Kennedy, Jeff Marquez, Dan McCutchen, Heath Phillips, Darrell Rasner and Steven White ¡V all of whom have taken at least one turn in the Yankees starting rotation. In 2007, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ran 23 different starting pitchers out to the mound.

LOOKING TO GET THE ADVANTAGE BACK: After getting out of the gate with the International League's best home record at 17-5, the Yankees have been struggling at PNC Field as of late. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is just 3-7 in its last 10 home games and has dropped behind Toledo and Pawtucket for the League¡¦s best home record. During the stretch the Yankees have been outscored 44-34.

SYRACUSE CHIEFS

CHIEFS HIT ROAD: The Syracuse Chiefs hit the road on Saturday for their longest road trip of the season ¡V 11 days. The Chiefs are an IL-best 18-11 this year away from Alliance Bank Stadium and have not lost two games in a row on the road in 2008.

PARRISH NEARING RECORD: Chiefs pitcher John Parrish won his eighth game in a row last night and tied Bill Faul (1964) and Hal Reniff (1970) for most wins to start a season. The Chiefs record to begin a year was 9-0 set in 1963 by Alan Koch.

SHOULD THE PITCHER HIT?: Chiefs designated hitters raised their batting average from .218 to .258 over the past month, but last week Chiefs designated hitters went 0-24 in a six-game stretch between six different players.

CHIEFS ADD ANOTHER INFIELDER: After losing Joe Inglett, Sergio Santos, and Hector Luna for a brief time the Chiefs will add another player this week, second baseman Kevin Melillo from Sacramento (Oakland organization). He will join Danny Sandoval, Pedro Lopez and Hector Luna in the Chiefs re-designed infield.

TOLEDO MUD HENS

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: With the promotion of 1B Jeff Larish and LHP Casey Fossum, the Mud Hens were in dire need of replacements.

1B Ryan Roberson was promoted from Double-A Erie to Toledo on Wednesday. While in Erie, Roberson was hitting .258 with 9 HR and 26 RBI. To fill Fossum¡¦s spot, the Hens promoted RHP Lauren Gagnier on Tuesday from the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps. With the Whitecaps Gagnier was 1-5 with a 4.07 ERA. In his first start with the Hens the 23-year-old went 4.0 innings, giving up only one earned run on four hits.

FAST FREDDY: LF Freddy Guzman more than doubled his season total of stolen bases on June 3. Guzman stole four bases off of the Louisville Bats, giving him a total of seven on the season. His four stolen bases are the most by a Mud Hen since Kimera Bartee had six against Columbus on July 7, 1997.

BRING IT BRENT: OF Brent Clevlen has been unstoppable as of late. By going 1-3 with his 13th HR of the year on Wednesday against the Louisville Bats, he extended his hitting streak and on-base streak. Clevlen¡¦s hitting streak is now at 15 games in which he has gone 25-55 (.455) with 7 HR, 4 2B, 27 RBI and 11 runs. His on-base streak now stands at a League-leading 41 games. Throughout those 41 games he has hit .374 (55-147) with 11 HR,

47 RBI, 28 runs and has a .474 OBP.

YEAR OF THE LONG BALL: The Mud Hens continue to hit home runs at a record pace. Toledo has 105 home runs on the season thus far which leads all of professional baseball, including the Major Leagues. Pawtucket is 2nd in the IL with 72. Toledo has 31 multiple-HR games on the season and have hit home runs in 53 of their 61 games, despite being shut out three times. The Hens are on pace to hit 248 HR this season. The most home runs in a season for the Hens came in 1999 when they hit 176.
