Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Anthony Hermelyn went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Connecticut Tigers 13-6 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Tuesday night.
The Tigers actually held the momentum early, as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after scoring twice in the second inning, and three times in the fourth. But the 'Cats clawed back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth, en route to setting their season-high in runs scored.
Aaron Mizell got the offense started in the fourth inning by reaching on a double, before scoring on an RBI double by Kolbey Carpenter.
After Dexture McCall walked, and Bobby Wernes reached on a single, Pat Porter drove home Carpenter with a sacrifice fly, which was followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Hermelyn, and Keach Ballard.
That brought up Johnny Sewald, who hit a double over the head of Connecticut center fielder Joey Havrilak, to drive home Hermelyn and Ballard, and put Tri-City on top 6-5.
One inning later, Tri-City stretched their lead to four runs when Hermelyn drove home McCall and Wernes with a two-run double to left field, and Ballard drove home Porter on an RBI single to right field.
The 'Cats added a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk by Johnny Sewald, before the Tigers pushed a run across in the top of the eighth.
However, Tri-City increased their lead even more in the bottom half of the eighth, when Carpenter led off with a triple to center field, then scored on a single by Wernes, before the ValleyCats wrapped up their scoring on back-to-back bases loaded walks by Sewald and Ballard.
By going 3-for-5, Hermelyn joined Carpenter (2-for-3 with a double, a triple, one RBI, and two walks), Wernes (3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI), Porter (2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI), and Ballard (2-for-3 with three RBI's, two walks, and one run) as ValleyCats batters with multiple hits on the night.
Getting the win for Tri-City was right-hander Kevin McCanna (2-2), who tied a career-high with five strikeouts, in 3.2 innings.
The victory also gave Ed Romero his 127th win as the manager of the ValleyCats, tying the franchise record set by Gregg Langbehn, who managed the team from 2004-2006. Romero will get his first chance at breaking Langbehn's record when Tri-City hosts Connecticut at 7 p.m., on Wednesday to wrap up this three-game set. On the mound for Tri-City will be RHP Trent Thornton (4-0, 3.40), with RHP Sandy Baez getting the start for Connecticut.
