Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

FISHKILL, NY (August 25, 2015) - In a season where Cyclones pitchers have carried the team for most of the year, LHP Kevin Canelon (5-4) put forth perhaps the most impressive performance of the year on Tuesday night. The southpaw tossed 8.0 shutout frames, allowing just a fourth inning single to Joe McCarthy, while striking out 10 and retiring the last 14 batters he faced as Brooklyn defeated Hudson Valley 3-0.

While Canelon mowed down the Renegades all night long, Hudson Valley starter Benton Moss matched zeroes with the lefthander, tossing 6.0 shutout frames of his own. But when Tyler Brashears came out of the bullpen for the 'Gades in the top of the seventh, Brooklyn was finally able to break through. Vinny Siena started the frame with a leadoff single and eventually stole second to put himself in scoring position with two-outs. Jose Garcia, who went 2-for-3 on the night and is hitting .375 during August, took advantage of the scoring chance with a line-drive single to left field that plated Siena and gave Brooklyn a 1-0 advantage.

One inning later, with Brashears still on the mound for Hudson Valley, the Cyclones tacked on a couple of insurance runs. Hengelbert Rojas started the frame with a leadoff single and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alfredo Reyes. With Branden Kaupe at the plate, Rojas moved up to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on an error by shortstop Michael Russell,. Vinny Siena then grounded out to move Kaupe into scoring position and Jeff Diehl capped the scoring with a ground-rule, RBI double that pushed the Brooklyn advantage to 3-0.

After Canelon pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth, and with his pitch count up to 94, the lefthander handed the ball over to closer Alex Palsha who tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to collect his 13th save of the season.

Brooklyn will return to MCU Park for the final game of the three-game commuter series with the Renegades. RHP Gaby Almonte (6-5) will make the start for Brooklyn. It will be Sidd Finch Day at MCU Park as the Cyclones celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the best pitcher that never was. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a Sidd Finch Bobblehead and the Cyclones will wear special '85 Mets inspired uniforms that will be raffled off throughout the game. All tickets for Wednesday night's game are just $10 and are on sale now by calling 718-507-TIXX, visiting the MCU Park Box Office, or right here at BrooklynCyclones.com.
