Staten Island Yankees News Release

After sweeping the Lowell Spinners over the weekend, the Staten Island Yankees (31-28) blew a 3-0 lead to the Aberdeen IronBirds (30-30) to eventually fall in 12th inning, 4-3.

The Baby Bombers got off to a hot start, taking an early lead in the second inning. Ryan Krill doubled to left field, followed by a Trey Amburgey double to plate the first run of the game. Amburgey came home two batters later as Drew Bridges singled to left for a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees added to their lead in the third inning. Kevin Cornelius doubled to right then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Cornelius came home to score shortly after as Krill grounded out to first, making the score 3-0.

Staten Island pitching, led by Luis Cedeno, held strong until the seventh inning. Mark Seyler replaced Cedeno, retiring the first two batters. With two outs in the inning, the IronBirds came charging back. Austin Pfeiffer hit his third home run of the season, followed by a Drew Turbin triple to left. Cedric Mullins brought Turbin home with a double then Ricardo Andujar singled in Mullins to cap off the inning, tying the game, 3-3.

The game was knotted until the 12th inning as catcher/first baseman Jake Hernandez (L, 0-1), recently sent back to Staten Island from Charleston, took the mound. Turbin, the first batter of the inning, drew a walk then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, D.J. Stewart drove home Turbin with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The two teams will play four times over the next two days due to rain outs and postponements in Aberdeen, beginning with a continuation of last week's postponed game which Staten Island leads, 2-1, in the bottom of the first inning. The first game will begin at 5 p.m. with the second game following 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
