Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Vermont Lake Monsters scored single runs in the first and second innings but it was all Spinners from there as Lowell scored a run in the third and four in the fourth to win their second straight, 5-2, Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
Vermont (26-35) got on the board right out of the gate. Richie Martin laced a one-out double down the left-field line and came around to score on a two-out single by Brett Siddall to give the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead.
The Lake Monsters added another run in the second after a bloop double by Steven Pallares led off the inning. A two-out single by Jesus Lopez on a play that could have been an out to extend the Vermont lead to two.
Lowell (32-31) got a run in the third, with Victor Acosta scoring Chad De La Guerra from first on a single to the right-centerfield gap.
The Spinners offense came alive in the fourth with a four run rally to take the lead. Singles by Tucker Tubbs and Tyler Spoon led off the inning and Mitch Gunsolus plated them both with a double to give the Spinners a 3-2 lead. After Matheny reached on a fielders' choice, taking second on a missed catch at third, Austin Rei brought home a run on a groundout and a Jeremy Rivera sacrifice fly put Lowell ahead, 5-2.
The score would remain there, with the Lake Monsters threatening in the eighth after a walk and hit batter led off the inning. After a flyout the Spinners went to the bullpen for closer Bobby Poyner who shut the door in the eighth and closed out the Lake Monsters in the ninth.
The Spinners offense was led by Tubbs and Gunsolus, each who had two hit nights, with Gunsolus collecting a pair of RBI. Kevin Steen started for the Spinners, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out two. Enfember Martinez (3-2, 3.08) picked up the win with 3.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out one. Poyner picked up his team-leading eighth save with 1.2 perfect innings, striking out three.
The Spinners look to close out the homestand with a sweep of the Lake Monsters when Javier Rodriguez (0-4, 6.11) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch. It will be a busy night at LeLacheur Park as Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito will both be on hand, as will UFC Fighter John "Doomsday" Howard, former Red Sox Sam Horn and author Grant Welker, who will be signing copies of his Market Basket book. It is 2008 Stedler Division Championship Replica Ring Giveaway Night, as the first 1,000 fans will receive a replica ring commemorating the first team to make the playoffs in franchise history. Gates are at 6pm.
