Auburn Doubledays News Release
Tonight's Game: The Doubledays host the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for game two of a three-game series at Falcon Park. Taylor Guilbeau is scheduled to make his eighth start for Auburn while Jared Robinson is the scheduled to make his twelfth start for Mahoning Valley.
Last Night's Game: The Doubledays defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-2 in game one of the series to end a five-game losing streak, Auburn's longest of the season. Randy Encarnacion led the Doubledays to victory going 2-4 with a solo homer and a bases clearing double. It marked the second time this year a Doubledays' hitter recorded four RBIs in one game.
The Wild Card Chase: With 14 games left in the season, the Doubledays sit 5.5 games back in the wild card race. State College currently leads the wild card chase with the following teams behind them: West Virginia 1.5 GB, Hudson Valley 2.0 GB, Lowell 2.5 GB, Aberdeen 2.5 GB, Connecticut 3.5 GB, Brooklyn 4.0 GB, Mahoning Valley 5.5 GB, Auburn 5.5 GB, Vermont 6.5 GB, and Batavia 8.0 GB.
Bullpen Domination: Auburn's 'pen has been dominant over the course of the season recording a 3.21 ERA (97 ER in 272.0 IP). The starting pitchers haven't been as fortunate recording a 5.11 ERA (138 ER in 243.1 IP). Also of note, the Doubledays have surrendered 131 runs in the first three innings combined (45, 36, and 50 in the first through third respectively). Those 131 runs account for exactly 45% of the runs Auburn's pitching staff has given up this year (294 total).
This Dude is On Fire: Since not playing from July 25th until August 6th, Max Schrock has played in 16 games. In his first game back, the infielder went 0-1 on August 6th. In the 15 games since, he has raised his batting average from .246 to .307 and has a hit in 13 of 15, including an 11-game hit streak in the middle. He is on a three-game hit streak going 2-4, 2-5, and 2-4 in those three respectively since ending his 11- game hit streak.
These Cleats Aren't Made For Walking: Over their last eight games, the Doubledays have drawn just eight walks, including none in three of eight games. This season, Auburn as a whole has drawn 169 walks, which is tied for second fewest in the New York-Penn League with Connecticut. Aberdeen has the fewest with just 145. Meanwhile, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers have given up the most. The Scrappers' pitching staff has surrendered 246 walks, eight more than Lowell's 238, which is second most in the league.
The Season Series: The Doubledays are 3-1 against the Scrappers this season thanks to a three-game series back in mid-July in Niles, Ohio. Auburn took game one 11-3, dropped game two 4-3, and won the rubber match 6-3 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game. The two teams will play five more games this year including tonight after last night's 5-2 Doubledays' win. In 2014, the two teams split the season series 5-5 and Auburn went 2-3 at home and 3-2 on the road.
