West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears downed the Batavia Muckdogs 3-2 on Tuesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. The Black Bears now improve their overall record to 33-30 while Batavia falls to 25-37 this season.
The Muckdogs got on the scoring train early on Tuesday evening. With the bases loaded, Batavia crossed the first run of the game on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. SS Erik Forgione tried to get the out at third base, but the Batavia runner beat the throw. The Muckdogs extended their lead in the first inning to 2-0 after a fielding error. RP Luis Paula entered the game with one out and forced a line drive double play to end the inning.
1B Albert Baur led the bottom of the second inning off with a double to right field before advancing to third and then scoring on two wild pitches to cut the Batavia lead to 2-1. Later in the inning with two outs, 2B Logan Ratledge and Forgione delivered back-to-back singles which was followed by a throwing error on a grounder hit to third by 3B Mitchell Tolman allowing Ratledge to score from second to tie the game 2-2.
In the third, RF Logan Hill got things going with a double down the left field line. DH Ryan Nagle then stepped in the box and crushed a single to left, scoring hill and giving West Virginia a 3-2 lead.
SP Brandon Waddell pitched only 0.1 innings, allowing two runs (earned) and two hits before exiting in the first. Paula entered the game and was shut-down for 4.2 scoreless innings to earn the win (5-2), giving up only two hits. RP Jerry Mulderig continued to be lights out in the bullpen, tossing 3.0 scoreless frames before RP Nick Hibbing blanked the Muckdogs in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
