Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- Mitchell Gunsolus gave the Spinners a 3-2 lead with a two-run double in the fourth and Lowell added two unearned runs in the inning to defeat the Vermont Lake Monsters for the second straight night with a 5-2 New York-Penn League victory on Tuesday at LeLecheur Park.

Vermont jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in both the first and second innings off Lowell starter Kevin Steen. In the first, Richie Martin snapped an 0-for-18 slump with a one-out double and scored on a two-out Brett Siddall RBI single to center. Steven Pallares led off the second with a double, advanced to third on a flyout and then scored as Jesus Lopez broke an 0-for-20 slump with a two-out RBI single off the glove of first baseman Josh Ockimey.

The Lake Monsters had a chance for more runs in the third as Steen walked three batters to load the bases with one out, but newcomer Tom Gavitt grounded into an inning-ending double play. After five hits in the first two innings, the Lake Monsters only hit over final seven innings was a Trace Loehr two-out triple in the seventh inning. Vermont did put two runners on in the eighth on a walk and hit batter, but Lowell closer Bobby Poyner struckout Pallares and Gavitt to end the threat.

The Spinners got a run in the third on a Victor Acosta RBI single off Vermont starter Angel Duno, then got the four-run fourth started with back-to-back bloop singles. Gunsolus followed with a line drive double to rightfield to plate Tucker Tubbs and Tyler Spoon with the go ahead runs. Then after a Vermont error put Spinners on second and third, Lowell got a pair of unearned runs on an Austin Rei RBI groundout and Jeremy Rivera sacrifice fly.

Duno (0-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits over four innings to take the loss. After allowing the two-run double and the Vermont error, Duno retired the final three batters he faced in the fourth. Lake Monsters reliever Tyler Painton then retired all nine Lowell batters he faced, two by strikeout, over three perfect innings before Cody Kurz tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning with two strikeouts. In all, the three Vermont pitchers combined to retire the final 15 Spinner batters of the game.

Loehr was 2-for-5 with the triple for Vermont, while Gavitt was 0-for-4 in his debut with the Lake Monsters after being promoted from the Arizona League Athletics. A 19th-round pick in the 2014 draft out of Bryant University, Gavitt played for the NECBL's Vermont Mountaineers in 2013 and is the first-ever to play for both teams. Reliever Emfember Martinez (3-2) allowed one hit over 3 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win for Lowell (32-31), while Poyner retired all five batters he faced to pick up his eigthth save of the season as the Spinners improved their record to 7-1 against Vermont.

Vermont (26-35) is nine games under .500 for the first time since they were 17-26 on August 4th, having lost seven of its last eight after winning eight of previous 10. The Lake Monsters will wrap up the five-game roadtrip on Wednesday at Lowell before returning home to historic Centennial Field for a three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats Thursday through Saturday.
