Black Bears Dig Deep to Defeat Batavia 10-9 in 13 Innings

Despite trailing 7-0 early in the game, the West Virginia Black Bears used 13 innings and 20 hits to take down the Batavia Muckdogs 10-9 on Monday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. The two teams combined for 35 hits while 2B Kevin Kramer highlighted the West Virginia offense by finishing the night 5-for-8.

Trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the second, C Daniel Arribas got the Black Bears on the board with an RBI triple to deep center. Arribas would later come in to score on a grounder to second by 3B Mitchell Tolman to lessen Batavia's lead to 7-2

In the third, DH Christian Kelley singled in Kramer who led the inning off with a triple to center. The Black Bears crossed three runs in the inning to cut the Muckdogs' lead to only 7-5. The teams played a scoreless fourth inning before the Black Bears got back to work in the fifth.

Tolman stepped up to the plate with two runners on and lined an RBI single left to bring the Black Bears to within one. Batavia added on two more runs in the sixth inning but West Virginia continued to keep digging out of the hole.

In the bottom of the sixth, RF Logan Hill launched his team-leading seventh home run into the Batavia bullpen in left field to make it a 9-7 game. In the seventh inning, the Black Bears evened the score at 9-9 when Kramer singled to right field, scoring both CF Alexis Bastardo and SS Erik Forgione.

The Black Bears and Muckdogs held each other scoreless through nine innings sending the game into extras. IF Chris Harvey entered the game as a pitcher in the 13th for his first professional appearance on the mound. The infielder turned pitcher looked to be in his element as he took the rubber and retired the Batavia hitters in order.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, Forgione delievered a two-out double, leaving Kramer a chance to become the hero of the night. Kramer knocked a single over the third-baseman's head to bring around Forgione and give the Black Bears a thrilling walk-off win.

West Virginia used eight pitchers in the game, with four pitchers combining to put up scoreless frames in the final eight innings. RP Tate Scioneaux, Sean Keselica, Julio Eusebio and Harvey were lights out, allowing only three hits and striking out eight hitters. Harvey picked up the win (1-0) in his first appearance as a pitcher, tossing the 13th inning and striking out a batter.

The Black Bears and Muckdogs will face-off again tonight at Monongalia County Ballpark with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m.
