
Trenton tops NH 3-2

Trenton Thunder News Release
(Manchester, NH)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova hurled 6 2/3 solid innings to lead the Thunder past New Hampshire 5-3 on Friday night from Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Down 2-0, Trenton (18-20) scored four runs in the sixth inning, helped by four New Hampshire errors in the inning, to take a 4-2 lead. With one out in the frame, Shortstop Eduardo Nunez doubled off of New Hampshire Starting Pitcher Rey Gonzalez (2-2). Nunez scored Trenton's first run of the game on an infield single by Left fielder Colin Curtis. Nunez went from second to third base on the hit, and scored as New Hampshire Second baseman Brad Emaus committed an error trying to throw out Curtis. First baseman Jorge Vazquez then reached on another error by Emaus to move Curtis to second base. A single by Designated hitter Chris Malec loaded the bases for Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Gonzalez hit a ground ball back to the pitcher's mound. Rey Gonzalez fielded the ball and made an errant throw into center field allowing two runs to score putting Trenton on top 3-2. The Thunder scored its final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Catcher Kyle Anson. Anson also provided an insurance run for the Thunder in the ninth inning on a solo home run off of New Hampshire Reliever Sean Stidfole to increase the lead to 5-2.
New Hampshire (22-20) scored the first run of the game on a solo home run by Emaus off of Nova with two outs in the first inning. The Fisher Cats tacked on a run in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Center fielder Todd Donovan. Nova (3-3) scattered eight hits and the two runs in 6 2/3 innings for the win. He struck out five and walked one. The win was Nova's first of May, and first since April 24th vs. New Britain. Thunder Reliever Eric Wordekemper recorded the final out of the game for his first save of the season. Gonzalez allowed six hits and four runs (two earned) in six innings to take the loss. Trenton Infielder Chris Malec had three hits in the win, and second three-hit game of the season for the Thunder.
Trenton and New Hampshire play the second game of the four-game series on Saturday night. RHP Ryan Pope (2-2, 4.32) will start for Trenton against New Hampshire RHP Brandon Magee (2-1, 2.63). Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m on Saturday night from Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
